The Naked Gun Trailer Gives Cody Rhodes a Makeover Like Never Before
WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes has a part in the new The Naked Gun movie, and fans may be shocked by his appearance in the trailer.
A new trailer for The Naked Gun starring Liam Neeson has several exciting stars in it, not the least of which is WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes, who looks a lot less tough than fans are used to seeing.
The former Undisputed WWE Champion appears very briefly in the new trailer, standing opposite Neeson across a bar and sporting a completely different hairstyle (still maintaining his trademark blonde color, though). His character looks quite gruff at first. However, that demeanor goes out the window the moment Neeson’s Frank Drebin Jr. grabs the back of his head and slams his face against the bar in a fit of less-than-legal police interrogation.
After the hit, Rhodes’ character, who does not yet have a name, looks normal, but he’s now sporting large Groucho Marx eyebrows for no real reason — such is the comedy of the Naked Gun franchise.
The movies, originally starring the late Leslie Nielsen and based on the TV series Police Squad!, are spoofs of the traditional police procedural stories that have become so ubiquitous in pop culture over the decades. As the trailer for this reboot shows, they’re known for a flexible form of reality where the funniest thing that could happen takes precedence over the most likely thing to happen. Hence why a WWE Superstar with the in-ring prowess of Cody Rhodes can seemingly be reduced to the guy who gets beaten up by a hard-nosed detective looking for answers like Drebin Jr.
Cody Rhodes' Acting Career
His role in The Naked Gun marks a return to acting for Rhodes, who has been dedicated to the ring since his famous arc as Derek Sampson in Arrow. In it, he played one of the many villains to cross paths with the infamous DC Comics superhero The Green Arrow (Stephen Amell). He also had a one-episode guest stint on SYFY's Warehouse 13 as Kurt Smoller in Season 2.
Currently, Rhodes is still one of the top stars in WWE as he tries to figure out what comes next for him after losing the Undisputed WWE Championship belt to John Cena at WrestleMania. However, as fans know, this likely won’t be the last time The American Nightmare will be in range of the title. In the meantime, they can get a look at him in the new Naked Gun movie, set to hit theaters on Aug. 1.
