Who Is Ty Dillon’s Wife, Haley Carey?
Kaulig Racing’s Chevy wheelman credits his wife’s unwavering support as the true motor behind his evolving career.
Some people are meant to drive, while some are born into it. Ty Dillon just so happens to check both boxes.
As the grandson of the legendary stock car racer and owner Richard Childress, son to retired Xfinity driver Mike Dillon and younger brother of his fellow Cup Series competitor Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon’s destiny naturally seemed to be preordained from the start, and it was not pursuing his early dream of suiting up as a linebacker or fullback in the NFL. As much as he tried to steer his future away from the fast lane, when racing is as deeply rooted as it is for Dillon – he and Austin used to play hide-and-seek inside Dale Earnhardt’s race cars – heeding a call to the track is inevitable.
Now, instead of battling it out every Sunday with the titans of the gridiron, he’s going toe-to-toe with the titans of the track. While ascending the tiers of competition, he’s leaned into his heritage, leaned into his skill, and leaned into his destiny, allowing him to find purpose despite a dearth of accolades that one might expect from someone with a NASCAR legacy as rich as Dillon’s.
Still, for Dillon, who’s devout Christian faith serves as a guiding tenet in his everyday life, when the bumps come – and Dillon’s no stranger to tough times – Dillon leans on his wife Haley Carey to be his rock. After all, considering the way in which the two paramours serendipitously met, one might conclude Haley was part of his destiny all along.
When did Ty Dillon and Haley Carey meet?
As he explains in a 2016 interview with NBC Sports, Ty Dillon originally met Haley Carey when they were barely teenagers at racing event in North Carolina.
“We met when we were both probably 13 or 14, her family is from Seattle, Washington, and they used to race Legends cars out West and they came down for the Summer Shootout, in 2011 maybe, at Charlotte [Motor Speedway],” opines Dillon. “[It] just so happened that their family was parked beside our family for about the two or three months of time the Summer Shootout was going on. We got to know them pretty well.”
While literally no one is smooth at age 13, Dillon, who admits to being a bit intimidated by Carey at the time of their adolescent courtship, luckily had an ace up his sleeve to help make initial contact.
“One of the guys that was working on our car that was also living with us at the time became really good friends with her two brothers,” Dillon states. “One of them actually came down and started living with our friend, and we all became really close. I started asking about his sister [Haley] because I remember seeing her at the racetrack and being so shy I didn’t even want to look her way because she was so pretty.”
For Carey, as Dillon recalls, it took a lot of effort on his part after finagling her phone number before she even remotely gave him the time of day.
“I tried to text her and call her for the longest time, and she wasn’t having anything to do with me,” the Cup Series driver notes. “I kept wearing her out until we were about 18, 19 years old, and I think it was around New Year’s her brother invited us to come out to their place in the mountains in Seattle.”
“Around that time, she started to talk to me,” he continues. “The first time we really talked on the phone I think we talked for about five hours. Once she finally gave me a chance, we really hit it off, and ever since I went on that trip out to Seattle, we’ve been together.”
Where did Ty Dillon and Haley Carey get married?
After getting engaged December 28, 2013, Ty Dillon and Haley Carey were officially married just a little less than a year later on December 20, 2014.
Dillon’s grandfather and his team owner Richard Childress hosted the nuptials at his picturesque winery, Childress Vineyards in Lexington, North Carolina. Peppered with flowers bursting from every corner of the venue, the magical evening was capped off with a dazzling array of fireworks. When it was time for the celebrations to wind down, the newlyweds revved up and rolled out in the ultimate getaway car – none other than Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro he was racing in at the time.
