The Rainmaker: Inside the Series

Grab your briefcase and smile for the judge: The Rainmaker premieres on USA Network on August 15, and before we delve into this thrilling new legal drama based on John Grisham’s best-selling novel, the cast is offering a look inside the series (above).

How to Watch

The Rainmaker premieres Friday, August 15 at 10/9c on USA Network.

“The series takes the book and runs wild!” series star Milo Callaghan explained in the above video about the intriguing “David-and-Goliath” story to come.

In a twist on the genre, it’s lawyer versus lawyer in The Rainmaker. A group of underdog attorneys led by Rudy Baylor (Callaghan) goes up against the slickest, most powerful firm in the land in a hospital case that involves murder, conspiracies, and revenge — basically, all the elements to keep you hooked. John Slattery of Mad Men fame plays the iconic antagonist Leo F. Drummond, a formidable senior partner at Tinley Britt, the series' morally bankrupt white collar firm.

But the clip goes even further, interviewing the actors for their candid takes on the characters they play.

The Rainmaker cast introduces audiences to a new legal thriller

“We’re a law firm that shows up to a fight with a knife, and we’re going against a law firm that is essentially an aircraft carrier,” explained actor P.J. Byrne, who plays "paralawyer" Deck Shifflet, who, along with attorneys Rudy Baylor and Bruiser Stone, operates out of a former taco hut.

“This is the ultimate David vs. Goliath story,” he added.

“When I read the first episode, I fell in love with it,” enthused Lana Parilla, who plays Jocelyn "Bruiser" Stone. In the sneak peek, she recounted her reaction to the '90s-era Matt Damon-led movie, shedding light on some of the changes we can expect in the TV series.

“When I saw that movie, I thought it was very male-dominant. I’m very excited and honored to learn that we had gender-bended Bruiser,” she said.

Actor Dan Folger also dished on his character Melvin Pritcher, who is original to the series and did not appear in the book, describing him as a nurse who knows a few secrets and is hell-bent on revenge: “Things… they get messy.”

There are many more gems and insights from the cast, including Madison Iseman (Sarah Plankmore), Karen Bryson (Dot Black), Megan McDonnell (Voreen), and Jonathan Harden (Agent Nick Cistulli), who raved about the series and the book: “What you get with John Grisham is really thorough storytelling. The show is no different.”

If the actors seem especially enthusiastic when discussing the new series, it shouldn’t be surprising. They’ve been immersed in mystery and intrigue while filming all 10 episodes.

“It's a cliffhanger almost every episode," Slattery said.
