Go Inside the Season 4 Premiere of Resident Alien, Directed by Series Lead Alan Tudyk! (WATCH)
Learn what it was like for the series lead to direct himself. It's not as easy as it sounds!

This story contains spoilers for Resident Alien Season 4, Episode 1, "Prisoners."
Four years into the lifecycle of Resident Alien, series lead Alan Tudyk finally steps up to the plate as director with the first two episodes of Season 4 (now airing on USA Network and SYFY every Friday). And you know what? He knocks it out of the park!

"It was incredible having Alan direct," creator, showrunner, and executive producer Chris Sheridan says in a special look inside the season premiere (watch the full video above). "First of all, he's the most talented actor I've ever worked with. He had a lot of energy going into it and came up with a lot of great stuff. Those [episodes] cut together beautifully, so I'm really excited about it."
"It's tough to act and direct simultaneously," adds Tudyk, who also had to play two different versions of Harry Vanderspeigle in Season 4, Episode 1. "It's tricky to direct yourself. We always do it to ourselves. 'Don't do that! Come on! You don't need an extra cupcake!' We're always telling ourselves what to do. But it's tough when you're acting because you kind of need to see it."
After working with him for several years now, Tudyk's co-stars don't need him to say much when he's directing because they've long since mastered "all his facial expressions and what they mean," notes Alice Wetterlund (D'arcy Bloom).
The hit show is an adaptation of the Dark Horse-published comic of the same name by writer Peter Hogan and artist Steve Parkhouse. USA Insider exclusively revealed the next volume in the Vanderspeigle saga, The Book of Changes (kicking off in August), which entails a visit from Harry's home world. Fittingly enough, Season 4 will feature Tudyk's former Dodgeball co-star Stephen Root as Harry's father in an upcoming episode.
