The Top 5 Most Romantic Moments In WWE History

There’s been no shortage of touching moments throughout the years in the WWE ring, but these are our favorites.

By Chris Phelan

Elimination Chamber is right around the corner, but Valentine’s Day is even closer — and that specific holiday has us thinking about some of the more heartfelt moments that have occurred throughout WWE’s history. Sure, we love the title changes, betrayals and high-octane in-ring action just as much as anybody, but some Superstars have the ability to tug at our heartstrings in a major way.

How to Watch

Watch Monday Night RAW every Monday evening at 8/7c on USA Network. Stream more exciting WWE series on Peacock.

Maybe we’re old-fashioned romantics at heart, but we love to see the softer side of the men and women of WWE — you know, the side that doesn’t involve steel chairs, superkicks and suplexes.

Here are the top 5 times that cupid’s arrow struck our favorite Superstars:

John Cena and Maria Share a Kiss – 2006

They say that a tender kiss can calm anybody’s nerves — and that’s exactly what happened in 2006 between Maria and John Cena on an episode of Monday Night Raw.

Ahead of a high-stakes matchup that would put Maria and Cena in tag team action against Edge and Lita, Maria was understandably anxious about the prospect of competing. At that time, she was primarily a backstage correspondent for WWE who only mixed it up in the ring on rare occasions. As she listed all the reasons why she was nervous about the upcoming match, Cena did what most of us would do. He listened to Maria while reassuring her that everything was going to be okay.

Then Cena did what most of us would not have the confidence to do, he let his lips do the talking, leading to one of the most passionate kisses in WWE history!

Given that the duo managed to score a decisive victory over Edge and Lita later in the night, we’d say that Cena’s strategy worked to perfection.

Otis Finally Gets the Girl – 2020

The beginning of the Otis/Mandy Rose love story was… complicated, to say the least.

What started as a good guy simply having a crush on a girl that was out of his league turned into a bizarre story that incorporated all the tropes of a high school he said/she said saga — complete with back-stabbings and drama courtesy of supporting players like Dolph Ziggler and Sonya Deville, who were both hell-bent at making sure Rose didn’t end up with somebody like Otis.

At WrestleMania 36, Otis defended the honor of Mandy Rose in a match against Ziggler and was victorious against the multiple-time champion. At that moment, Rose realized that the person she was meant to be with was Otis all along — leading to an unforgettable post-match kiss between them! Sadly, their relationship fizzled out over time, but that didn’t lessen the impact of this particularly romantic WrestleMania moment.

In the end, the good guy got the girl. It was a moment that we’ll never forget. We’re not the only ones, either — the WWE Universe to this day is very vocal about wanting to see Otis and Rose rekindle their romance again.

A Proposal on the Grandest Stage of Them All – 2017

It was a moment the world was waiting for.

After years of speculation that spilled over into the reality TV world, John Cena finally dropped down to one knee and proposed to his long-time girlfriend Nikki Bella. The fact that he did it publicly in the ring at WrestleMania only added to the magnitude of the moment with the fans in attendance clearly voicing their approval. The look on Nikki’s face said it all.

We always were proud of John for his engagement ring selection, too. Nice work there, if we do say so ourselves!

There is nothing more romantic than real-life feelings of love being expressed in a WWE ring, and that’s why this moment deserves to be on this list.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to go back to crying over the fact that the couple broke off their engagement a short time later. Although they are currently very happy in their current respective relationships, we always loved John and Nikki together, and we’ll always have this WrestleMania proposal to look back on with adoration.

A Relationship Straight Out of Shakespeare – 2001

The relationship between Spike Dudley and Molly Holly in 2001 was like something out of Shakespeare. The romance bloomed between the two in the midst of a war between two factions — the Dudleys and the Hollys. Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley hated Hardcore Holly and Crash Holly, and yet Spike and Molly still were drawn to each other against their respective family’s wishes. The two were essentially a modern-day Romeo and Juliet.

We have to hand it to the two of them, Spike and Molly made the relationship work, which is why memories like their New York City date night live on as some of the most precious and genuinely romantic moments in WWE history. From walking through Central Park like tourists to sharing an intimate meal together, the two of them exhibited #couplegoals before the hashtag became popular.

This relationship made us realize how much we’d be down with WWE revisiting the “star-crossed lovers” storyline in 2023! Triple H, if you’re reading this, please take it under consideration.

Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth Reunite – 1991

For many fans, this moment is the definitive romantic moment in WWE history, and still stands the test of time by showing that sometimes moments transcend pro wrestling and become permanently embedded in the cultural zeitgeist.

At WrestleMania VII, Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior found themselves on opposite sides of the ring in a Retirement Match — the stipulation itself was shocking considering both men were arguably at the peaks of their respective careers. Nevertheless, the two Superstars found themselves bound by it. The drama built over the course of the match, not only because of the in-ring action, but the fact that Miss Elizabeth, the estranged valet of Savage, was spotted in the crowd by WWE cameras. The stage was set for something huge to happen.

Despite Savage hitting five of his signature top-rope elbow drops at the end of the match, the Ultimate Warrior won in decisive fashion, breaking the hearts of the WWE Universe who had grown to love Savage.

To make matters worse, Savage was attacked after the match by his current valet Sensational Sherri just to rub salt even further into his wounds. But in the blink of an eye, Miss Elizabeth stormed the ring to save Randy Savage, leading to them reuniting in the middle of the ring.

Words do not do justice to this moment — the crowd reacted as if they had all won the lottery, showering Savage and Liz with cheers that are usually reserved for fan favorites winning their first world championship. Fans throughout the arena were openly crying tears of joy.

At that moment, WWE was perfect. Expertly telling a story of redemption between two of the most talented Superstars of all time. Savage and Liz took us on a rollercoaster of emotion throughout their relationship, and it culminated in the most romantic moment in WWE history.
