Finished Binging Mr. Robot and Hoping For More? Here's What The Creator Said About Season 5

Could Mr. Robot join the slew of USA Network originals getting revivals? Here's what the creator said in the past.

Mr. Robot, USA Network's critically acclaimed cyber thriller, which ended its run in 2019, has hacked its way onto streaming. For fans of the trippy series, which starred Rami Malek as a brilliant but troubled hacktivist working to take down an evil corporation, it's a chance to binge the whole show again. For new audiences, it's a chance to experience some of the mind-blowing twists for the very first time.

And, when the last episode of Season 4 ends and there's no "play next episode" button, old and new viewers alike might be forgiven for wondering if the series finale is really the end. Shows have been rebooted or revived after a long absence, just look at Psych and Monk. Will there be a Season 5 of Mr. Robot? Never say never, but for now it seems like the answer is no.

Why Did Mr. Robot End At Season 4?

Mr. Robot, which was nominated for slew of Emmys and won a couple (including an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series win for Malek), premiered its fourth and last season in October 2019. The fourth season wasn't initially meant to be the last season, and when the show was first renewed after Season 3, the fourth season was only supposed to be eight episodes long — shorter than other seasons. However, in late August of 2019 creator Sam Esmail announced that Season 4 would be the final season, and the episode count was upped from eight to 12 so that they would have enough space to finish the story.

"Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here," Esmail wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news.

In a later interview with Entertainment Weekly, Esmail said that while a fifth season was a possibility at one point, Mr. Robot was never a series that was going to go on forever.

"I don’t know we ever thought it was going to be longer. In fact, my answer has always been between four and five seasons, and I never quite knew what the exact number was," Esmail said, explaining that after the end of Season 3 he presented a thought experiment to his writers room. They outlined what the last two episodes of the show were going to be and worked back from that to determine if they had one or two seasons worth of material to get to that conclusion.

"I just asked the writers, if we were being honest with ourselves, how much story do we have from where we ended season 3 to these last two episodes? We let that dictate how much story we had left, and it turned out that this would be the final season," Esmail said.

Given that the finite ending of Mr. Robot was always in mind, it seems unlikely that Esmail and Co. would revisit Mr. Robot for a fifth season having already delivered the story to its conclusion.

The folks behind Mr. Robot have been busy, though. Esmail has directed or produced a number of movies or TV shows that Mr. Robot fans might enjoy, like Netflix’s Leave the World Behind, Prime Video’s Homecoming, or the Peacock series Angelyne and The Resort. Malek, the star of Mr. Robot, won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody and been in films like No Time to Die and Oppenheimer.
