'Chucky' Creator Don Mancini Says He May Not Be Done Making Movies In The Franchise

"Chucky" creator Don Mancini discussed whether the character will ever make his way back to the big screen now that he's a big TV star.

Although an entirely new generation of fans are getting freaked out by Chucky thanks to his hit TV show, franchise creator Don Mancini isn’t done with the idea of seeing the murderous doll make his way back to the big screen.

How to Watch

Watch Chucky on the USA app and Peacock.

From his bloody debut in the 1988 film “Child’s Play” to the upcoming premiere of “Chucky” Season 2, Mancini has been the mind behind the ever-growing and twisted world of Charles Lee Ray. Over the years, he’s come up with a lot of characters for Chucky to terrorize, and those who managed to survive made the jump with him from film to TV on the USA Network and SYFY original series.

However, just because Chucky jumped mediums doesn’t mean he’s done headlining his very own movie just yet — at least not if Mancini has anything to say about it. Speaking to TVInsider, the franchise creator explained he’s absolutely loving the freedom he gets working on the TV show, as well as the fan’s reaction thus far.

“Well, I hope to be able to continue to do the TV show for as long as people want to see it because I really love the format,” he explained. “And I think it’s really reinvigorated the franchise and brought up a lot of new energy and life and blood and fresh meat! So I would like to do that.”

That said, he still has two passions, filmmaking and Chucky, so he may not be done creating feature-length slashers.

“At the same time, I would also like to do more movies, because I love movies, too. And I think, you know, I think they’re not mutually exclusive,” he explained. “I think they can exist, you know, just as Marvel characters can potentially exist in both media. So that’s my hope. But it’s ultimately down to the fans and what they want to see, but so far, so good. And like feel what I’ve heard just in advance of people who have seen the first few episodes like yourselves, it seems like people are enjoying it. So if you’re enjoying it, tell people.”

Prior to Season 1 of “Chucky,” Mancini first got his start as the writer behind “Child’s Play,” “Child’s Play 2,” “Child’s Play 3” and the movie that introduced Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine, “Bride of Chucky.” However, he wasn’t done there. Things got even bloodier with the fifth installment in the franchise, “Seed of Chucky,” which introduced the world to Glen/Glenda. It also marked the first time Mancini got in the director’s chair. He continued to helm the next installments in the franchise, “Curse of Chucky” and “Cult of Chucky,” where Nica Pierce was introduced.

All this led up to 2021 when “Chucky” the TV show hit the small screen and set the killer doll on his greatest and deadliest adventure yet, all with Mancini as the showrunner. Now, he’s poised to do it all again with “Chucky” Season 2.

Catch the premiere of “Chucky” Season 2 on USA Network and SYFY tonight, Oct. 5, at 9/8c.

You can catch up on Season 1 on Peacock right now.
