Series creator, showrunner, and executive producer Chris Sheridan has answers in the latest behind-the-scenes look (above).

How the cast's waltz sequence came to be in Resident Alien

"Last summer, I was eating dinner and, on the radio, came Patti Page's version of '[The] Tennessee Waltz,'" Sheridan explained in the video. "And I immediately had this vision of our whole cast dancing together on the streets of Patience. And then, as we were arcing out the stories [for Season 4], it felt like it was a perfect fit for D'arcy's story about her loneliness."

"This scene comes about when D'arcy is at a low point," explains D'arcy actress Alice Wetterlund. "I think this scene is meant to signify that she's at a bit of a rock bottom and is really on her own. She has no one else to turn to and so, she's battling those inner demons."

Ironically, it's Harry (Alan Tudyk) who ends up helping D'arcy with a major emotional breakthrough in Episode 6 ("Soul Providers"), stating that without her presence, "the world would be incomplete." After all, how could she be worthless to the wider universe after rescuing an innocent child from the Greys last season? It took a lot of guts and empathy to pull off something so brazen and dangerous.

This encounter effectively shakes D'arcy out of her self-pitying and suicidal funk, and the character decides to get her drinking problem under control by attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

D'Arcy Bloom (Alice Wetterlund) and Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko) hug in front of a lake on Resident Alien Episode 407.

"It’s something that we’ve been building toward, a rock bottom place for D’arcy because she has had issues with substance abuse," Wetterlund told USA Insider over Zoom ahead of the Season 4 premiere. "The suicidal piece of it all was important because I think for a lot of people who struggle with substance abuse, their life sometimes doesn’t look, on paper, like you would imagine rock bottom to be."

She continued: "It’s more of an internal rock bottom and so, that piece of D’arcy’s journey, where she’s considering what the world would be like without her, is an important turning point for her because she’s like, ‘There’s two ways to go here. I could change my ways and go the recovery route or I could explore this downward spiral.’ It’s really fitting that Harry is the one that helps her her make a decision in his own unbelievably direct way."
