Here's Everything You Need To Know About NASCAR's Team Penske

While there are many elite racing teams in NASCAR and “Race For The Championship,” there is perhaps none more recognizable than Team Penske.

For decades, the team has not only been a powerhouse within the NASCAR Cup series, but it holds accolades in the Xfinity Series as well as internationally in Formula 1 and Indy Car circuits. Not to mention, it’s a thriving business venture in both automotive and transportation as well. 

Currently, within the Cup Series, it boasts popular drivers and “Race For The Championship” subjects like Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano as well as Austin Cindric. However, things all got started in 1958 when the founding man himself, Roger Penske, became one of the most successful road racers ever to grace American motorsports.

According to the team’s website, he retired from driving in 1965 but continued to keep racing in his orbit. Team Penske eventually made its way to Indy car racing and debuted at the Indianapolis 500, where his driver finished seventh and earned the coveted Rookie of the Year honor. From there, Penske continued to grow.

In 1972, the team made its NASCAR debut, winning the Indy 500 this time. The team continued to dominate the world of NASCAR until 1977 when it took more than a 10-year hiatus from the organization, focusing on other racing endeavors.

When they returned as Penske Racing South in 1991, they swung for the fence, raking in top-tier drivers and wins across the Cup Series and more. In 2004, Kurt Busch joined the team and helped gain some more traction for Team Penske. In 2010, Brad Keselowski captured the team’s first NASCAR championship when he earned the Xfinity crown. He went on to bring the team its first NASCAR Cup Series win in 2012. Not long after, Logano joined the team and earned a Cup Series of his own. 

He and Keselowski went on to earn more Xfinity and Cup Series wins, adding more accolades to the team’s dozens of wins and national championships. All this while the minds behind the behemoth juggled its various other professional racing circuits and a thriving business.

Now, with the 2022 season in full swing, there’s no telling what great heights Team Penske plans to go to in the future. But fans can watch all the drama unfold on “Race For The Championship” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network.
