We already knew that Harry has a penchant for getting in a little too deep with his cases and subjects, but his relationship with Vera may be taking it to a whole new level. Catch up on that and more with this week's five highlights from The Sinner “Part IV.”
Carmen Bell is crazy -- but is she a reliable source?
The one person to have spoken out against the late Dr. Sheldon Poole is now in a mental hospital. But some of the details Harry and Heather glean from speaking with her ring true. It's our first introduction to the so-called “Beacon,” who we later learn is psychotherapist Lionel Jeffries, the founder of Mosswood Grove and the man whose portrait pops up several times this episode: in Poole's journal, in the book Escaping the Labyrinth, and on Vera's mantel in that cabin in the woods.
We finally witness the last time Heather saw Marin.
After a drunk night out, Marin runs away to Mosswood once and for all, despite Heather and Jack's insistence otherwise. This is the first mention of the labyrinth, though, that eventually leads Heather on track to identifying Jeffries and driving up to Niagara Falls.
We learn more about the rock altar and its rich, ritualistic history.
Harry visits Vera, per her request, on Mosswood Grove, and slowly uncovers more details of the rituals and beliefs that dictate the commune's day-to-day life.
The tape Heather finds in the storage unit is downright creepy!
Now this is a dark side of Mosswood's "work" we haven't seen before. It ends with a bloodied man imagining an innocent bystander as his father and beating him up in a room for of others. Among them is Marin.
Harry is seemingly hypnotized by Vera.
After Vera ditches him in the middle of the woods outside Mosswood, he finds her later that night in a cabin waiting for him. He's angry, but Vera jumps into his anger and finds vulnerability within it, continuing to question him and what he feels underneath the rage. The episode ends with them staring at each other, an ominous thumping growing in the background, and then the screen cuts to black. Harry wakes up the next morning in the Rockford Lodge room where Julian first murdered Bess and Adam.
