For years, Esme Carmona was a reliable member of the NFFA’s New Orleans-based surveillance team. Her professionalism stemmed in part from her belief in the NFFA’s principles, namely that The Purge functioned to curb violent crime.
How did Esme become the subject of an NFFA manhunt? It all started on Purge Night, when she witnessed the murder of her old friend Dr. Drew Adams. In the words of NFFA boss Curtis, she “cared too much”; she let her personal life and convictions interfere with her job. Here’s 7 key moments that lead to Esme’s fall from NFAA grace.
1. She watches Dr. Adams get murdered on Purge Night
Things get personal on Purge Night when Esme watches live video of a group of men surrounding her friend Dr. Adams. When she refuses to hand over a file, they shoot Dr. Adams dead. Before Esme leaves the NFFA surveillance office, she discretely transfers footage of the murder from Vivian’s computer to a USB drive.
2. She uncovers a secret recording at Dr. Adams’ house
During a trip to Dr. Adams’ house, Esme locates a hidden compartment under the staircase that holds a recording from one of Adams’ psychological studies.
3. Darren tells Esme about Dr. Adams groundbreaking study
Darren helps Esme understand the recording she found in Dr. Adams’ house. Adams was testing her theory on violence addiction that, if true, would disprove the NFFA’s claim that the Purge works to inhibit violent crime. The implications would be massive.
4. Esme’s boss is on to her
As she goes through surveillance footage of Olivia Hughes’ house, Esme finds that some of the footage has been removed from the archive. The detective assigned to Hughes’ case informs her that the case has been closed, and that Hughes’ death has been ruled a suicide. That’s not the worst of it; she has no idea that her boss, Curtis, has installed a camera in her computer monitor and watches her from his desk.
5. Esme finds a mic sewn into the lining of her purse
During a meeting with Skye, an anti-NFFA hacker, Esme realizes that someone has sewn a mic into the lining of her purse, adding more fuel to the NFAA’s fire against her.
6. The NFFA declares Esme situation a “priority 1 manhunt”
After a meeting with Darren, Esme suddenly finds herself running from several NFFA officers. Curtis, her former boss, tells his team that “she has committed an act of treason” and that her situation constitutes a “priority 1 manhunt.”
7. The NFFA issues public alert about Esme
The NFFA issues a mobile alert that. “All citizens should be on the lookout out for Esme Carmona.” “Looks like you’re public enemy number one,” Ryan tells Esme.
