Warning: Contains spoilers for Season 8 of Suits. The ninth and final season premieres this Wednesday!
Just when we thought the highs couldn’t get any higher, the season 8 finale of Suits ended on a scene that left us soaring! But Harvey and Donna’s big moment was only one part of an emotional episode. If you can’t remember all the twists and turns, now is the time to go back and rewatch episode 816, “Harvey.” No time for a replay? Don’t worry; we’ve got the key points right here to get you up to speed before the Season 9 premiere.
Donna Found Romance... with Thomas Kessler
Things started on a professional footing -- Donna was only working to find Louis’ longtime client a new general counsel -- but these two just couldn’t deny their chemistry. Soon they were spending their nights together and sharing the most intimate sides of themselves. Thomas was every inch an honorable, admirable man, and it really seemed as if Donna was heading to the Big L. If only things could have been that simple…but before we get into that, lets get into a few more things.
Personal and Professional Got Mixed
Thomas was eyeing a major expansion deal, but an even bigger deal seemed to fall into his lap when Harvey’s client Simon Lowe, CEO of Pierrepont Malls, tapped Thomas to be the home goods anchor in his shopping centers. Unfortunately, the deal was too good to be true; Simon was using Thomas as a stalking horse to get another company back to the bargaining table. Harvey was furious, but he was also bound by attorney client privilege so he couldn’t say anything. And that is where things started to get messy…
Harvey Broke Privilege
To make a complicated story simpler (*deep breath*): Harvey signaled to Alex that he should try to steer Thomas back to his original deal (sort of breaking privilege), then Donna put two and two together so Harvey told her what was going on (definitely breaking privilege). Donna tried to stay quiet but she couldn’t keep it from Thomas because, feelings. Thomas got pissed because, principles, and he took his old deal and sent out a press release that ruined Simon’s plans. Simon did the math, realized Harvey broke privilege, and hired Daniel Hardman for some payback. Hardman eventually triggered an ethics hearing that put Harvey in the hot seat and Hardman in the position to finally exact his long-sought-after revenge. Whew!
The impending ethics hearing kicked off much introspection as everyone in the firm wondered about what they would say if called to the stand. Harvey and Donna cast a fresh eye on their own relationship, leading Thomas to wonder who exactly Harvey was to the woman he was falling in love with. Meanwhile, Robert was troubled by an incident from from years ago; it turns out he manufactured evidence to put away a mugger who attacked Sam, but the mugger wound up being murdered in prison, and Robert had never gotten over it. This leads us to…
The Ethics Hearing
Harvey’s day of reckoning arrived, and it really looked as if Hardman would have Harvey disbarred -- Harvey did break privilege, after all. But in a surprise move, Robert stepped in to take the fall for Harvey, stating that it was HE who broke privilege (his story was corroborated by both Alex AND Thomas Kessler, who compromised his honesty policy in order to protect Donna, one assumes). Robert was disbarred, and pretty much everyone was left shocked. More soul searching ensued, as Harvey grappled with what Robert did for him and Sam grieved the loss of the man who was like a father to her.
But it didn’t end there. Because while Sam leaned on Harvey in her grief (the two had actually grown close), something stirred inside Harvey. Realizing his true feelings for Donna, Harvey almost wordlessly excused himself and rushed to Donna’s apartment, where he and Donna embraced, Donna lead Harvey back to the bedroom and…well, here we are.
