Suits star Katherine Heigl has been a show regular for one season, but she's been a Suitor for a long time. We recently had a chance to speak with the actress and get her thoughts on Darvey, what we'll see from Samantha Wheeler, and what fans can expect to see in the final season!
USANetwork.com: It's the final season of Suits. How does it feel?
Katherine Heigl: It's definitely bittersweet, certainly for me as a fan and getting to be part of the cast. It's been such an incredibly exciting ride and a really fun show to be a part of. I imagine it's like a wealth of emotions for the cast that's been here for nine years building the show and building these characters and creating what we've all come to love so much.
USA: You've been a fan since the beginning?
KH: I didn't start watching when it first aired. I caught on a little late, so I probably caught on when they were into season five, and quickly binged the first five seasons. Then I was hooked.
USA: As a fan, what are your thoughts on the Harvey and Donna situation, and them finally hooking up after so many years?
KH: If they had not done that I think that the fans would have revolted. I was just saying, thank God they did it at the end of last season and didn't choose to wait until the end of the final season, because I think it's really fun to get to watch them now engage in this relationship.
As a fan, I want to see that. I want to see all that chemistry. I want to see what it's like for them at work now. How do you work with the person that you're sleeping with? I want to see all of that. I'm so, so happy they finally gave us that, as a fan.
USA: It seemed like there might have been some sort of romance brewing with Samantha and Harvey.
KH: I thought they might be going there, and at one point I was really intrigued by the idea, because I was like, “Oh, that's so Samantha,” to foil this and get in the middle of it. Samantha definitely didn't realize last season the weight of the connection between Harvey and Donna, so it wouldn't have been like her trying to steal him, but I can imagine if they had done that, what the beginning of this season would've looked like. It would've been dramatic, but I don't think it would've been for the best.
USA: What can we expect from Samantha this season?
KH: You're going to see a lot of Samantha, especially in the beginning of this new season, dealing with the fallout of Robert (Zane) leaving, because he was so important to her on so many levels. He wasn't just her mentor. He was her family and somebody that she leaned on for all of that. For the successes, the failures... just needing the company, needing to be around somebody she knows cares about her. She now has lost that, or lost easy access to it. She struggles initially with whether or not she still fits in and begins to look around her at her coworkers and people that she was competing against and fighting with. She starts to realize how much they've been there for her this last year and how much they've stepped up since Robert left. You get to see a different side of Samantha sort of acknowledging her need for that kind of emotional connection.
USA: When Samantha came in last season, she came in as this hardline fireball. She and Harvey (Specter) got into it. Can we expect some more fireworks and fiery moments between her and Harvey?
KH: You know a tiger doesn't change its stripes. She might have a new heart of vulnerability, but she's still the same kind of gal. We get into a giant argument and she's been boasting for all last season that she can kick his ass in the ring. He's been rolling his eyes, like there is no way. So, then it becomes, well, let's put our money where our mouth is, right? And they have a good little match in the ring.
USA: Before joining the show, who was your favorite Suits character?
KH: My favorites were Donna, Katrina and Louis. Just because I loved each one's quirks. I gravitate towards comedy and that kind of quirky comedy of Louis's and Katrina's, I loved so much. Donna was just like the kind of woman I wanted to be. I want to know what everybody is thinking and feeling before even they do... and be beautiful, and tall and slender, and wear chic clothing.
I loved them all for different reasons. I was so bummed when I came on the show and Gina (Torres) left to go do her show. I felt like Jessica Pearson is just so fierce, so beautiful, so confident and powerful. You cannot ruffle her. I still love that character and love that actress. And, of course, Harvey and Mike. They're magic together. How could you not love them, and their dynamic and their interactions, and just who they are?
So, I don't know if I have a favorite, I can't say!
USA: What would you say to Suits fans who've been waiting for this moment? What can they expect in the final season?
KH: I have no idea how they plan to end it but I have a lot of faith in our creator and the writers, and I know they're not going to leave their fans hungry. I know that they're going to feed everybody what we want, what we've come to love. And you're going to be satisfied by all the things you've come to love about Suits. There's going to be plenty of tension and contention, and there's going to be plenty of tender, heartfelt moments.
I really hope that this final season, with any show you've fallen in love with, with characters you've fallen in love with, you want the end to represent all your hopes and dreams for them. Harvey and Donna getting together, Louis and Sheila having their baby. You want it to wrap up in a way that you can go, “I know they're going to go on and live some amazing, wonderful life, and do great things, and it's all good."
