Are Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) meant to be? Or has that ship sailed? Sometimes it seems like they -- and we -- will never know for sure. The final minutes of Suits 710 were all about Donna trying to figure it out. It was kind of a shock … and kind of not. The way they feel about each other (or don’t) has been on both of their minds lately. And if you think about it, we’ve had more than a few hints this season that screamed “You should have seen that coming!”
1. Harvey’s Got a Secret
When Harvey asks Donna to cut him a check for Holly Cromwell (Zoe McLellan), Donna is puzzled. She thought they were going to put her on the payroll. Harvey explains that something Donna said when she interviewed Holly made her not want to work at Pearson Specter after all. “Harvey,” Donna says, “we’re a tight-knit group. We don’t betray each other, and we don’t keep secrets from each other.” She does not regret doing what she had to do to find out where Holly stood. Harvey isn’t coming down on Donna; he just needs the check. Suddenly, Donna asks if there’s something he’s not telling her about this woman, because it seems like he’s been different lately. Harvey says no, nothing to see here. But when Donna asks if he wants to join her in a drink, he says maybe tomorrow night. He has something he has to deal with right now.
Donna’s right. Harvey has been different lately. But it’s not because of Holly. It’s because he’s been keeping his relationship with Dr. Paula Agard (Christina Cole) a secret from her.
2. Paula Knows
Harvey has been putting off telling Donna about him and Paula. And Paula is getting annoyed with him, partly for missing yet another chance to tell Donna, but also for making it seem like she’s making him do this. After all, Harvey brought it up in the first place. Harvey bristles, but Paula points out he had no trouble telling Louis (Rick Hoffman) about their relationship. Yet he seems very keen on keeping it a secret from Donna. He asks if she’s worried that he has feelings for Donna -- implying, it seems, that he doesn’t. But Paula is a therapist. She reads people for a living. And she was also Harvey’s therapist. She reminds him about the panic attacks he had after Donna stopped working for him. Paula and Harvey wouldn’t even know each other if not for his feelings for Donna. She adds that maybe Harvey likes being the object of Donna’s attention and affection, and doesn’t want that to change. She just flat-out says it: “Donna loves you. At least part of her does.” And maybe part of Harvey likes that and doesn’t want it to stop. Hmm, maybe?
3. Donna Knew?
At last, Harvey tells Donna about dating Paula. Donna acts like she is totally fine with it, and even says she’s amused he thinks she didn’t know. She reminds him that the day he made managing partner, he drove himself to work in the black Ferrari Daytona. He told Donna and Louis he had things to take care of that night, but she knows his schedule. And him. So, she knows he drove himself straight home from the office, changed into whatever outfit he thought would impress Paula the most, and went right over to her house and swept her off her feet.
Up until that point, we were buying it, but something about Donna’s tone made it sound almost like she wished Harvey had swept her off her feet. She reminds him about the other night, when she asked if something was going on, because he was acting different. What she was really doing, she says, was trying to get him to open up about Paula. She’s glad he finally told her. But when Harvey leaves, her facade crumbles. Obviously, she is not good with this. Rachel (Meghan Markle) walks in, takes one look at her, and asks if she’s okay. “You look like you just saw a ghost.”
4. Where There’s Smoke
It’s not like Donna and Harvey just broke up, but it still feels a lot like rebounding when she tries to rekindle a romance with old flame Mark Meadows (Jay Harrington). Sparks fly, too -- until he confesses he is married, though unhappily. Donna says she is not going to be the answer to his problems. (And, clearly, he is not going to be the answer to hers.) Later, Louis tells Donna that his old flame, Sheila (Rachael Harris), is marrying someone else. He says Donna doesn’t understand what it’s like to find out twice in one year that the person you thought was the love of your life doesn’t want you. She chokes up a tiny bit. “I understand that more than you think.” Then she tells Louis about Mark. But is that really who she means?
Mark calls Donna and says he still wonders what would have happened if he hadn’t walked away from her way back when. He can’t walk away from her again. He’s at the Carlyle, Room 508, if she wants to see him. Please come. As if her convo with Louis wasn’t enough to tip the scales, Donna later has an awkward encounter with Paula in Harvey’s office. She plays it cool but is clearly stung that Parvey are going to celebrate their two-month anniversary at a restaurant that both women know is his fave.
Donna marches into Mark’s hotel, dressed in pink and nervously ready to go for it. (Are we the only ones who wondered what she was wearing under that coat dress?) Just as she reaches his door, Rachel, who knows something’s up, sends her a text saying she deserves the best. It’s enough to stop the madness. When Mark opens the door, Donna says, “I’m sorry, I can’t do this.”
5. You Must Remember This…
Louis finds Donna in her office, shaken and angry about the line of questioning Andrew Malik (Usman Ally) used in his case against the firm. She is furious with Louis for calling off the mock trial that would have prepared her for Malik humiliating her and saying she is only COO of Pearson Specter because she slept her way there.
Later, Louis confesses he couldn’t press Donna about Harvey in front of a roomful of people at the mock trial, because Louis slept with Sheila. He kept imagining someone putting his life on trial. He adds that, since sleeping with Sheila, he’s been counting the days until his soul mate marries someone else and walks out of his life forever. He just wants to tell her that the man she was meant to be with is standing right in front of her face. He should have done that when he had the chance. You can almost see the light bulb switch on over Donna’s head. Right about then we were thinking, is there an echo in here? Because earlier, Mike (Patrick J. Adams) urged Donna to tell Harvey how she feels, if she thinks there’s even the smallest chance that they might ever want to be together. If she doesn’t tell him soon, she might lose the chance to tell him at all. She appreciates Mike’s heart, but says “Harvey and I don’t want to be together.”
Her eyes tell Mike she’s sure of that, but her lips say something different later, when Harvey walks into her office with news. Donna just walks up and plants a kiss on him. But he doesn’t kiss her back. “I’m sorry, Harvey,” she says. “I just had to know.” As she walks away, something dawns on Harvey. Paula was right. Now what?
