All good things must come to an end. But before we officially say goodbye to Suits (the series finale airs Sept. 25), USA will be re-airing the pilot episode this Wednesday, Aug. 28. It’s time to take a look back at where it all started so mark your calendars.
While a lot has changed in eight years, the thing that’s so striking is how much has stayed the same. See, while some shows take weeks to figure out how it all works, Suits knew exactly what is was from the first frame -- a rare feat in the world of television (trust us, we’ve been in this biz a long time).
But don’t just take our word for it; check out our list of 11 totally Suits things that were established in the pilot, and tune in for the pilot re-watch this Wednesday!
1. HARVEY THE GAMBLER
When we first meet Harvey Specter, he’s cleaning up at a high-stakes poker game. But his real gamble comes moments later, when Harvey bluffs a bullying CEO into making good on a deal he’s trying to change at the last minute. From the very beginning, Harvey knew how to play the man, and nothing has changed since then.
2. BUTCH AND SUNDANCE
Or was it Batman and Robin? Whatever your reference of choice, one thing we can all agree on is that Harvey and Mike made a great team from the jump. We miss ya, Mike! (*sniff)
3. THE HARVEY-SIZED CHIP ON LOUIS’ SHOULDER
The engine that powers Harvey and Louis’ relationship has always run on equal parts love and hate, although it’s only recently that these two “friendversaries” (that’s a thing, right?) have been able to acknowledge the love part of that equation. The hate? That’s been on display since Day 1.
4. KNOWING THE CHARACTERS
Some shows can take whole seasons to find the chemistry between the characters -- not Suits! Just seeing Jessica tell Harvey to shut up with that special blend of salt and pepper on it tells you everything you need to know about the push and pull of their relationship.
5. HARVEY’S STREET CART OBSESSION
Did Harvey always love hot dogs? That answer is, emphatically, yes. Do we think he’s one of those weirdos who only puts ketchup on their hot dogs like a five year old? We really hope not…
6. THAT SPECIAL SOMETHING BETWEEN HARVEY AND DONNA
It’s always been there. Way before “The Kiss,” before #Darvey, before we even knew what a can opener was really for, there were the little moments that told us these two were destined for so much more.
7. THAT MIKE-AND-RACHEL MAGIC
Ditto the connection between these two. There were sparks flying every time Mike and Rachel shared the screen, is it any wonder they ended up together?
8. 'WHAT’D YOU JUST SAY?'
On Suits, the best legal solutions are just as likely to present themselves during a completely innocuous conversation with a colleague as they are following a marathon research session. The beauty of having so many razor sharp legal minds under one roof, we suppose. Teamwork makes the dream work!
9. ALL THAT BACK AND FORTH
“I’d explain it to you, but then I’d have to care about you.” “Good, you’ve hit on me. We can get it out of the way that I’m not interested.” “Sometimes I like to hang out with people who aren’t that bright, just to see how the other half lives.” Turns out, witty repartee has been integral to Suits’ DNA from the very beginning. Banter!
10. MOVIE QUOTES
It wouldn’t be Suits without someone throwing a movie reference around. Movie quotes would become a lingua franca of sorts for the team, and the pilot is where it all started, with Mike and Harvey discussing The Godfather after a small victory in court.
That magic seasoning word that all Suits characters love to use to spice up their speech. Did that start in the first episode? You’d better g--damn believe it!!!
