In the most recent installment of Queen of the South, Teresa (Alice Braga), our Queen, and James (Peter Gadiot), her former friend/lover/co-worker (you can be the judge), had their first couple’s fight (wishful thinking on our part?). It was as dramatic as one could possibly imagine, and we were living for every second of it. The fight itself lasted no longer than a few minutes, as they were interrupted by Maltese law enforcement seeking to capture Teresa, but it was a defining moment in their relationship. Here’s how it all unfolded:
1. The Declaration
Now that she has been discovered by Camila and the General’s minions, Teresa must find a safe passage out of Malta and avoid the local authorities along the way. To add insult to serious injury, she also finds herself trying to wrap her head around the return of an old flame. She seeks the help of her money launderer, De la Peña, but is quickly berated by James, who doesn’t understand why she just gave up the location of the safe house. Clearly not one for mansplaining, Teresa claps back, “I don’t need you to lecture me.”
2. The Walk
Moments after Teresa silences the patriarchy, James finds himself trailing our Queen, practically begging for her forgiveness and a complete pardon. After all, they didn’t necessarily end things on good terms, and for all we know, Teresa washed her hands clean of her former ally. She politely reminds him that the last time they were together he sent bullets in her direction.
3. The Bad Blood
Well, now the gloves are completely off. In an accusatory fashion, James responds, “As I recall, you and your merry men attacked me at the train depot.” Clearly, there are some pent-up frustrations between our dearly beloved couple (arguably, the couple of the decade??). Each has spent hours agonizing over the eventual face-off, and here is where they finally bury the hatchet.
4. The Back & Forth
Teresa is not one to be trifled with, and she quickly reminds James of his place. “The El Santo coke belonged to me; it was for me to take.” Not so fast, Mister! Our Queen is once again demonstrating her prowess in the battlefield called love, but we sense there might just be a willingness to forgive on her part. James, however, refuses to back down. “No, you walked away from the business.” Oh, so that’s how it’s going to be? The sexual tension is palpable.
5. The Confession
When Teresa claims that James betrayed her, he attempts to win back her affection. “I didn’t betray you. I was protecting you.” This, though, doesn’t sit well with her. “I didn’t want your protection, and I don’t trust you.” James’ shot at redemption isn’t going quite as planned, so in one last-ditch effort, he attempts to display his true feelings for our Queen. “Since the first day we met, I’ve been trying to keep you alive and whether you want to believe it or not, I’m still trying to.” Essentially, he confesses his undying love for Teresa Mendoza though, right?!?! Here's the full scene; you be the judge -- lovers' quarrel or strictly business?
Will Teresa and James live happily ever after, or will our star-crossed lovers stay in the frenemy zone? Tune in to Queen of the South Thursday nights to find out!
