It was a night fit for a Queen! From glam stations to gourmet nibbles to a heart-thumping performance by hiphop queen (and Season 3 guest star!) Remy Ma, the Queen of the South Season 3 premiere party at Hollywood’s NeueHouse pulled out all the stops for fans.
There were several highlights of the party, but one thing you could enjoy -- whether you were one of Queen’s ivory-clad revelers in Hollywood or a pajama-wearing super-fan in Anywhere, USA -- was the cast and producer panel following the premiere screening with executive producer David T. Friendly, executive producer and showrunner Natalie Chaidez, Veronica Falcon (Camila Vargas), Hemky Madera (Pote Galvez), Idalia Valles (Isabela Vargas), and Peter Gadiot (James).
Alice Braga (Teresa Mendoza) was not in attendance, but sent a special video message thanking fans for making their “dreams come true” and promising “a lot of action!”
You can see the entire panel below, but here are a few gems you must know now!
Teresa keeps evolving this season
As promised when Queen of the South premiered in 2016, Teresa Mendoza is going to rise to enormous power and, by Season 3, she is well on her way. David Friendly teased that our star is getting an “upgrade” this year -- including to her wardrobe (no flannel!). “She is growing into the ‘queenpin’ that we promised the audience,” Friendly remarked, noting that the upgrades aren’t only superficial. “She’s getting smarter, she’s getting craftier, and she’s not to be underestimated.”
And trust us, by the first episode of Season 3, we can see the make-good on the promise!
Natalie Chaidez is a queen in her own right
We love Queen’s behind-the-scenes queen Natalie Chaidez. Seriously, this is a woman with an illustrious TV career (Heroes, Judging Amy, V, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, 12 Monkeys) and one of the only Latina showrunners in Hollywood -- a true trailblazer!
Chaidez shared her thoughts on why this story about two powerful women matters and the room erupted with applause: “These are our stories. This is my story. This is your story. This is the story of us navigating through a world that people say isn’t ours and that people say we can’t have power in. So, it’s been an honor to work with this character, to work with Alice, to work with Veronica, and I’ve been empowered by the journey.”
Isabella will choose a side
The offspring of Sinaloa’s ultimate power couple Camila and Epifanio Vargas -- the young and fabulous Isabella -- is going to come into her own this season. According to Valles, Isabella has been the goody-two-shoes, the bad girl, and now she’s had her entire world turned upside down after what went down last season. We’re going to see which path she chooses this year and we’re also going to see her in a wedding dress, so keep an eye out for that precious mother-daughter moment in 301!
Veronica puts the finishing touches on Camila
It’s no secret that TV stars have dedicated hair, makeup, and wardrobe stylists to perfect their looks onscreen, but there’s one thing that Veronica Falcon insists on doing herself when she transforms into Camila Vargas: her red lipstick!
“They let me do it myself,” the actor said, “because it’s kind of like a ritual with Camila.”
It’s not just lipstick for Falcon; it’s the transformation into a woman who has power over everything in her life.
“We balance more than people give us credit for,” Falcon said. “In this story, we see Camila as a mother of a teenage daughter -- that’s not easy -- and she’s trying to handle her business. And, of course, she has her revenge story. And, of course, she’s a governor. She has to do it all.”
Hemky does a very funny Veronica impression
Speaking of Veronica’s lipstick, co-star Hemky Madera does an impression of her very deliberate lipstick application -- and also of her sexy wiggle-walk. We won’t try to describe it; just watch at the 18:00 mark below!
There’s romance afoot
Without giving too much away, Chaidez teased that it might be time for Camila to have a new relationship in Season 3 and also revealed that “Pote gets a little honey this season.” We’re also going to see more of James, but Chaidez wouldn’t give any spoilers on the future of Guero (Jon Ecker). The audience did, however, make it known whether they were #TeamJames or #TeamGuero. James had an edge, but, of course, Peter Gadiot was sitting right there!
We’re going to learn more about Pote and James
Pote fans will be happy to learn about his backstory this year -- from cook to professional hitman (listen, the guy is great with a knife). Meanwhile, we’re going to understand James better in Season 3. Chaidez revealed that James’s mysterious character has a military background and that his past will pay off big this season -- we can’t wait!
Look out for new faces!
We learned El Santo is coming back "in a powerful way" in Season 3 -- though not in the first episode. We also have some new faces on the roster this year, including a fine performance from hip-hop artist Remy Ma who makes her acting debut this year!
“Remy Ma is not only a great performer but she’s a wonderful actress,” Friendly shared. “We love crossing over to that world,” he added. “We bring over the hip hop queens to Queen of the South!”
Watch the full cast and producer panel below and tune into the Season 3 premiere of Queen of the South Thursday, June 21, at 9/8c!
