Warning: Contains Season 1 Spoilers
Every hero needs a friend. The sidekick is, quite possibly, one of the most important character archetypes, for they drive the protagonist towards achieving their destiny. In Queen of the South, Teresa Mendoza finds her constant and faithful companion in the form of Brenda Parra, who would go to hell and back again to ensure the safe delivery of her best friend. As we anxiously prepare for season two, join us in reviewing the top five moments of Teresita and Brenda.
1. Their first encounter in Sinaloa.
Before Teresa Mendoza became the Queen of the South, she was a money trader in Sinaloa, Mexico. While Guero is the first to recognize her beauty and grace, Brenda is the second, and it is safe to say it was love at first sight. The stars aligned the night they met, and set in motion a friendship that would go down in history.
2. When Teresa puts her life on the line to save Brenda and Tony.
In the blink of an eye, Teresa’s world turns upside down after the death of her boyfriend, Guero. Moments after receiving the news, she comes to the realization the cartel has a price on her head as well, and is forced to run for her life. This, though, doesn’t prohibit her from putting her life on the line to save Brenda and her son, Tony.
3. The tear-jerker of a reunion in Dallas.
Although Teresa is the first to make it out of Mexico alive, she is not deterred in her attempts to bring Brenda and Tony to Dallas. She and Brenda orchestrate an escape plan that is precarious and haphazard, but surprisingly, quite successful in the end. They arrive to the Promised Land in one piece, and stage a reunion so wrought with emotion –- it even made us a little misty-eyed.
4. Their quest to expose the insidious contents of Epifanio’s book.
In any literary masterpiece, there is a seemingly impossible quest that the main character and his/her sidekick must fulfill. For Teresa and Brenda, it is the journey to reclaim their freedom by exposing the secrets and misgivings of Epifanio Vargas -– all of which are found in the notebook. Together they leave their safe haven in Dallas, and travel back to Mexico with the hope of uncovering the truth.
5. Teresa’s decision to look after Tony long after the demise of Brenda.
The death of our dearly beloved friend was particularly difficult to watch. The two heroines embarked on a journey to destroy Epifanio Vargas, but in the process, lost one of their own. Despite losing her best friend to the hands of the cartel, Teresa is left with the one person who would conjure up a loving memory of Brenda -- Tony.
