Warning: Contains Spoilers for Pearson Season 1
Who doesn’t love a good flash-forward? When we started Pearson -- USA’s new Gina Torres-led Suits spinoff -- the first scene showed Jessica shredding mysterious photos of a slain man.
Now that the season is over, we have clarity on everything that happened “Eight Weeks Earlier” -- starting with Jessica’s arrival in Chicago to work for Mayor Bobby Novak (Morgan Spector), who was in those pictures, and how he ended up that way.
In last night’s finale, the cold open replays -- only now, new details emerge and we see the same scenes from the pilot told from different points of view with added context. When we first catch up with Jessica this season, she’s destroying photos of Tommy Diehl and heading to a shadowy side-street to meet someone. And now it makes sense…
Who is Tommy Diehl and why does he matter?
Diehl was a union boss who was murdered in connection with Bobby’s family. Pat McGann (Wayne Duvall), the smarmy real estate developer who puts Jessica’s family on the street, knows about Bobby’s past, using it as leverage with the mayor’s office.
What were those pictures Jessica was shredding?
The pictures that appear in the pilot -- and again in the finale -- aren’t only of the murdered union boss. They also show Nick (Simon Kassianides), Bobby’s driver, with Diehl. At first, it appears that Jessica’s boyfriend Jeff Malone (D.B. Woodside) receives this evidence from a friend in the Justice Department, forwarding it along to Jessica so she can watch her back. By the finale, however, we realize that Jeff actually swiped that file; hence, Jessica needs to obliterate it.
Who murdered Tommy Diehl and what are the Feds looking for?
In the penultimate episode, Nick goes to Keri, (Bethany Joy Lenz) wracked with guilt and wanting to confess to Diehl’s murder. Keri involves Jessica, who realizes that there’s more to the story than Nick says. For instance, there’s no way Nick could have physically disposed of Diehl’s body by himself. She’s pretty sure Bobby was there too. Meanwhile, the feds are investigating Bobby and Jessica, while detaining Jeff and questioning Keri.
What was that last scene between Jessica and Bobby really about?
With the feds closing in -- and Nick ready to crack -- Jessica needs to confront Bobby about Diehl’s murder. We see the continuation of the scene from the pilot when Jessica leaves the office for a clandestine meeting; turns out, it’s with the mayor. Bobby is not surprised to hear about Nick’s confession (he was there, after all), but he also can’t let Nick say anything (did we mention Bobby was there?). Jessica, as the mayor’s fixer, offers to clean up this mess, but it means she’s no longer his errand boy. And, if we know Jessica Pearson, she’s got a plan.
