In a new video, USA Network takes a look at Universal Pictures’ 1917. At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
“Their friendship is tested,” says the film’s Academy Award-winning director, Sam Mendes. “Their strength as human beings is tested.”
1917 stars George Mackay as Lance Corporal Schofield and Dean-Charles Chapman as Lance Corporal Blake. In the video, the actors discuss the soldiers’ complicated relationship, and the immersive environment in which the movie was created.
“You can rehearse it as much as you’d like, but I remember my heart racing, like pounding, in my chest [during filming],” Mackay says.
1917 hits theaters January 10, 2020.
