It’s Peter Jacobson’s birthday today! So, in honor of Proxy’s big day, we have some fun facts about the Colony star’s early acting days that we learned from the man himself!
The Famed New York Actor Is Actually From Chicago
I grew up in Chicago, came here to go to graduate school for acting, and then stayed. I have never made the move west like so many of my friends and colleagues. The industry had caught up with me, because now there is so much more TV in New York, so I just waited 25 years for that to happen.
He Studied at Juilliard Before Getting Into TV
Back then [at Juilliard], they wouldn't give you training in front of the camera. It was considered to be déclassé -- low-brow -- which is stupid, because if you want to work and make money and support yourself as an actor, you've got to do more than just hit the back of the house; it's a very different creative process. I just got out and worked Off Broadway mostly for about seven or eight years, then started doing little things on the west coast, and more and more I just started getting stuff on TV and film.
His First NYC Apartment Was a Total Dump
Juilliard had us either at the West Side Y, which is literally -- when they say it was the size of a closet? It was a closet. The beds folded up. I didn't live there. The other option was sort of a rooming house. It's not a hotel, but there's just a lot of transients. That was a little dicey. It was 93rd and Broadway.
That’s Where He Saw His First Waterbug!
That was my first introduction to the Palmetto bug or the water bug, which to me was just a big f---ing cockroach. I never saw those in Chicago… One fell off the ceiling and bounced off my head onto the floor. The heebie jeebies from that just subsided about three weeks ago and that was 25 years ago.
To Subsidize the Acting Income, Peter Taught SAT Prep Classes
The Princeton Review liked actors, because they could be entertaining, so you had to have an audition to get into the class to be able to be [an SAT] teacher. So I went through the training program and it turned out that they rate the teachers at the end, and on the eastern seaboard, I was in the top ten most liked teachers.
Turns Out, His Teaching Did Not Translate Into Very Good SAT Scores
I was number seven in terms of the worst scored improvement… They loved me, but I didn't teach them s----. I was too busy trying to get them to laugh.
Thanks for the laughs today, Peter! Hope you have a great birthday! Wish Peter a happy birthday on Twitter at @Official_PeterJ.
