The Sinner's third chapter of Season 2 is all about Julian -- especially once he's tried in criminal court instead of family court for murder Bess and Adam. Plus, this episode leaves us off with one of the series' most shocking cliffhangers yet, where Heather is literally left speechless -- aside from, "Holy s---." You said it, Heather. Catch up on our top five moments below.
Just like with Cora Tannetti, Harry once again goes above the call of duty for a murderer
Just as he did with Cora, Harry views Julian more as a victim to his circumstances than a coldblooded murderer. That's why when the 13-year-old is thrown into the back of a police car to be brought down to be booked into a detention center and tried in criminal court, Harry gets in the back of the car to comfort him. He offers the terrified Julian his phone number and tells him to call at any time. (Vera tells Julian to ignore Harry, but Julian is still on the fence by episode's end.)
We get our first real glimpse of "the work" that Mosswood Grove inspires in Vera and others
While dealing with the stressors of her son’s situation and ongoing case, Vera is shown in the barn on the commune, curtains drawn back and the giant stone altar front and center. She’s doing yoga-like poses while screaming and writhing and making animalistic noises. She’s crying, trance-like, and goes to the stone to caress it and look up at it’s top peak. She’s angry, but seemingly at peace by the end.
Julian loses it in his psychological evaluation
In what was meant to be a psychological evaluation to determine whether or not Julian is mentally stable, he confesses to poisoning Bess and Adam because they lied. The session ends with him screaming out of the room and into Vera's arms.
Heather doesn't believe Vera is Julian's real mother (and she has evidence!)
After going through Marin's belongings for the first time since her disappearance at Mosswood, Heather finds her ex-girlfriend’s favorite book growing up, and inside it, she's underlined the name Julian throughout. Heather thinks Marin is Julian's real mother, and tries to convince Harry of the fact.
Dr. Poole kills himself instead of helping Harry and Heather. Was he a member of Mosswood?!
Harry and Heather show up at Dr. Sheldon Poole's medical practice to ask him some questions. He had signed Julian's birth certificate, but admits he wasn't there for the birth and didn't check Vera's vital signs at the time to see if she was postpartum. When pushed for more answers on the odd nature of the certificate, Poole ends up killing himself before giving them more information on his experience visiting Mosswood. In the end, Harry and Heather find a miniature stone alter similar to Vera's in the barn. Mosswood seems to have infiltrated more than just the commune ...
