Critical acclaim is pouring in for The Sinner, USA Network's new limited series starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman, premiering tonight at 10/9c. As Cora Tannetti, Biel plays a young mother who snaps one day, murdering a stranger at the beach in broad daylight. Pullman stars as Det. Harry Ambrose, the investigator, who -- even though there's absolutely no question that Cora committed this heinous crime -- is determined to understand why. The whydunnit is solved over the course of The Sinner's eight-episode run, and there will be no cliffhanger as to what set off Cora that terrible day at the beach.
In addition to nabbing a prestigious "Certified Fresh" badge from Rotten Tomatoes, The Sinner is piquing critics' interests for a number of reasons.
It's Jessica Biel As You've Never Seen Her Before
"For this to work requires a strong actor playing Cora, and Biel (who also executive produces) delivers ... Biel is a revelation in the lead role. Sometimes, actors insist on a producer credit in order to protect their image, but here she’s casting her image aside in favor of a more interesting one." -- Alan Sepinwall, Uproxx
"She gives a committed performance, measured even in its required extremes, one that the film's doggedly arty execution and relentless creepiness do not keep from registering as genuine." -- Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times
"Her grief and pain are palpable. Even behind her seemingly vacant eyes, we know there’s something there." -- Amy Amatangelo, Paste Magazine
It's Beautifully Cinematic
"It all adds up to a drama that's strikingly filmed, gratifyingly smarter than it needs to be and -- better still in an era of bloated episode counts -- snappily paced." -- Daniel D'Addario, TIME Magazine
"What’s left is an amiable and largely engaging murder mystery, gorgeously lensed and smartly paced..." -- Chris Cabin, Collider
It's a Perfect Role for Bill Pullman
"We get to know Ambrose as we might get to know a person we’ve just met: The more time we spend with him and the more the more facts we’re privy to, the more we’re able to glean information not just through stories he tells and references he makes, but by looking at him and listening to him." -- Matt Zoller Seitz, Vulture
"Pullman feels like he’s entering a new phase of character acting -- he gives a great turn in the upcoming The Ballad of Lefty Brown as well -- and he’s a perfect fit here, finding the right balance of 'experienced cop' and 'empathetic protector.'" -- Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
"He’s quirky enough that, given a wide berth, the always-reliable Pullman will find a way to own the role and add some shading of his own." -- Mike Starr, New York Post
It Will Become Your Summer Obsession
"As long as the show sticks the landing and resolves the mystery in a way that pays off on all the spine-tingling suspense, The Sinner will go down as one of the most engaging summer series on television." -- Laura Hurley, CinemaBlend.com
"In a TV era increasingly defined by trauma and violence, The Sinner still stands out." -- Matt Zoller Seitz, Vulture
"The premise and psychology of the main characters capture your interest." -- Jeff Jensen, Entertainment Weekly
