In the office, Jessica Pearson is as fierce as they come, but Gina Torres, the actress who plays her on Suits, could not be more friendly and fun. That’s not to say that there’s zero overlap between Jessica and Gina (see below), which is something we discovered this week during a chat with Pearson, Specter, Litt’s managing partner.
What else did we learn? Among other things, Torres, who is an accomplished singer, shared what song she might bust out after a couple of beers -- or, better yet, vodka -- on karaoke night.
On Finally Revealing Mike’s Secret
I just thought, 'How exciting and where do we go?' It’s exciting and it’s terrifying, all at the same time. It’s like, "Oh, yeah, man! It’s about time that he got caught! Absolutely!" And then, "Now what? What are the implications of this?” Mike might go to jail, and what about the rest of us who are complicit in this? It’s a little terrifying and, to date, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be because I honestly don’t know!
On Not Being the One Who Sold Out Mike
I think there was a part of me that just hoped that Jessica had had enough and decided to set fire to her own house. [I was a suspect] for good reason: I’m tired of keeping his secret! Everybody’s been so pissy with me, it’s like, "Where has the respect for Jessica gone?" There was just such disrespectful behavior and language this season, that I was like, "You know what? Forget you! Please tell me that Jessica was the one who dropped a dime!"
On the New Jessica-Jack Dynamic
That’s an odd little relationship. Jessica needs allies wherever she can get them, clearly.
On Her Karaoke Jam
It depends on the mood. It depends on how many drinks I’ve had, quite frankly! Is it beer or is it vodka? I think that has a lot to do with it. I’ve been known to do "Proud Mary.” If I’m really drunk, I’ll do something from Yentl -- Barbra Streisand.
On How She’s Like (And Not Like) Jessica Pearson
I’m not a totally different person? It’s just shades. I think where we’re similar is probably temperament, but where we differ is execution. I think she’s probably a lot more brutal in her execution than I could ever be.
On Her ‘Leaning Board’
A leaning board has been around the entertainment industry, and specifically, the movie industry for many, many years. It was devised for actors who were in costumes that were difficult to sit in, whether it was a monster costume or a silk dress. When you have to look pristine, you can’t sit in a director's chair without being all creased… I always thought that Jessica is, and should look, impeccable -- and so they built me a leaning board for various reasons. One is -- tight! It’s not always comfortable to fold myself up into a director's chair and continue breathing, but also, there’s a lot of waiting around. I don’t think people realize how much waiting around there is when you’re shooting a film or a television show.
On How Much Rick Hoffman Cracks Her Up
All the time. All the time. ALL THE TIME. He is awesome. He’s funny and he’s sweet and he’s just so talented. Part of it is that he’s so committed to the scene and what we’re doing. That Louis, man -- that’s a heck of a character!
On Jessica’s Visit to Louis in His Mud Bath
I don’t know we got through that... It’s the magic of editing. It was hard to keep a straight face.
