Al Trautwig
Studio Host
Al Trautwig rejoins USA Sports for the 2004 US Open Tennis
Championships as studio host. This year marks Trautwig's third stint
with USA after calling play-by-play along with Barry MacKay and Mary
Carillo during the Network's 25+ hours of coverage during its first US
Open Tennis Championship in 1984. Trautwig came back to USA in 1989 as
studio host during USA's 84+ hours of tennis during his second foray.
The 24-year sportscasting veteran recently finished his fifth Olympic
assignment and 10th Olympics overall, as the gymnastics, trampoline and
triathlon play-by-play announcer. Trautwig's NBC Olympic resume
includes work as the biathlon and cross-country skiing commentator in
Salt Lake in 2002. In Sydney in 2000, Trautwig was the lead gymnastics
play-by-play announcer, and also called the triathlon and road cycling
events. He also worked as a reporter for NBC during the Barcelona Games
in 1992.
Trautwig's Olympic experience dates back to ABC's coverage of 1984
Summer Games in Los Angeles, where he served as a reporter for several
events, including judo and rhythmic gymnastics. He also was a part of
the CBS coverage of the 1992, 1994, and 1998 Winter Games, as well as
the 1988 Winter Games for ABC.
In 2002, Trautwig became a studio host for NBC's coverage of the Arena
Football League. Trautwig and analyst Glenn Parker lend their weekly
analysis and commentary to the "AFL on NBC" pre-game and halftime
studio shows.
Trautwig began his broadcasting career in 1979 calling New York Apollo
Soccer for WMCA Radio. Over the next two years, he called soccer games
for Cosmos Radio, New York Arrows Indoor Soccer for WPIX and
SportsChannel, and worked on ESPN college soccer telecasts.
In 1980, the multi-talented Trautwig joined USA Network, where he was
the leading sports personality, working on more than 500 telecasts. He
did play-by-play for the North American Soccer League, NCAA basketball,
National Hockey League, gymnastics, tennis and golf.
Following four years at USA, Trautwig moved to ABC, where he hosted the
Wide World of Sports and worked on nearly every big ABC broadcast
event. Over the next six years at ABC, he participated in nine Emmy
Award-winning productions.
Currently with Madison Square Garden Network, Trautwig has multiple
responsibilities with the New York Knicks and Rangers. He also handles
commentary on NBC's Emmy Award-winning coverage of the Ironman
Triathlon.
