THE LAST GOODBYE (#4009)
EPISODE PREMIERE: July 24, 2005

LOGLINE:
Johnny goes on the road in search of a rock and roll legend - a man who has been dead for many years. His trail will lead him down a path where he becomes the rock star, and through his visions he will relive the last few days leading up to the rock star's mysterious disappearance.

SYNOPSIS:
Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall), Sarah (Nicole deBoer) and Walt (Chris Bruno) attend an open mike night at a local club where Darren Foldes (Ben Foster), son of the famous deceased singer-songwriter Roy Foldes (Derek Hamilton), is performing. Striking up a conversation with Darren after the show, they learn that Darren never even knew his father and is playing his dad's old guitar only because he was able to find it on eBay. Touching the instrument, Johnny is hit with a vision of a young Roy performing an intense solo onstage. Next, he flashes on an older Roy pawning his guitar for cash. Coming out of the vision, Johnny tells Sarah and Walt that contrary to popular belief, he's convinced Roy Foldes is still alive. Sarah insists Roy was killed 18 earlier when he drove his car off a cliff into the ocean, but Johnny reminds her that his body was never found.

Recognizing how important Roy's music is to Sarah, Walt encourages her to go with Johnny to search for the presumably dead rock star. The two take a road trip to New York City and reminisce about their first trips together, years earlier. Sarah confesses that she once met Roy, and Johnny is hit with a vision of a teenage Sarah describing her fateful encounter. Back in the present, Johnny and Sarah pay a visit to Roy's former tour manager, Nathan Berk (Andrew Airlie), now the CEO of a major record label. Johnny tells him he believes Roy is alive, but Berk dismisses him. Shaking Berk's hand as he leaves, Johnny has a vision of an angry young Berk arguing with Roy about his career and a girl named Crystal. When Johnny asks Berk about the girl, he cuts the conversation short and sends him on his way. Outside, Johnny is confronted by Doug Davison (Patrick Gilmore), a reporter from a rock music magazine, who has learned Johnny is a psychic and has been asking questions about Roy. He hands Johnny an address, suggesting it might help the investigation. A short while later, Sarah and Johnny find themselves at the home of Matthew Meter (Aleks Paunovik), a "personal antiquities dealer," who has retrieved and restored the car in which Roy Foldes supposedly died. As Johnny slides into the front seat, he's thrown into a vision of the car heading towards the edge of a cliff. He looks over to see that no one is in the driver's seat and instantly realizes that Roy was not in the car when it plummeted into the ocean.

Johnny and Sarah watch Darren, who is a bit drunk and unsteady, perform at a seedy bar in Philadelphia the next day. After taking some flack from an intoxicated patron and starting a fight, Darren talks briefly with Sarah about his father. The young man reveals that he only recently discovered he was Roy's son and becomes very defensive when Sarah assures him that Roy would be proud of him. As Johnny and Sarah leave the bar, they run into Doug, who again pushes for information in hopes of breaking a story. They brush him off and head for Rockland County to find Roy's former writing partner, Stephen Vickings (Gerry South). When they arrive at Vickings' vintage record store, the former musician shows them the original lyrics to one of his and Roy's most famous songs, "I'll Remember." As Johnny touches the paper, he is hit with a vision of the duo recording the song many years earlier. During a break in the recording session, a girl bumps into Roy and he's instantly smitten. Back in the present, Johnny and Sarah ask Vickings about Crystal, who he claims he doesn't know, and Elysian Fields, a concert venue Roy mentioned in Johnny's vision. The two head to what's left of the venue and as Sarah grabs his arm, Johnny is sent into another vision of a teenage Sarah at a Roy Foldes concert. He sees a young Roy and Aubrey (Gina Holden), the girl from his earlier vision, as Roy prepares to take the stage with Vickings. In a romantic gesture, Roy gives Aubrey a bracelet and nicknames her Crystal. Back in the present, Sarah plays a song on Roy's last record with the name Aubrey in it. She and Johnny then head to a motel mentioned in the liner notes to investigate further.

After trying a couple of doors, Johnny's visions reveal which of the motel rooms Roy and Aubrey shared. Johnny sees Roy propose to Aubrey and later sees Aubrey stabbed with a syringe and murdered in the bathtub by an unseen assailant. Johnny realizes that Aubrey knew her killer. In the present, Walt calls Sarah to tell her he's found Aubrey's death certificate - except that the cause of death is reported as an overdose in her own apartment. As Johnny and Sarah speculate about the circumstances surrounding the murder, Doug shows up, bruised and battered. He tells them he was assaulted by some men who stole all his notes and tapes and Johnny realizes the only person with enough at stake to want the story buried is Berk. Johnny wants Sarah out of harm's way, but in a series of visions, he sees how Roy's music helped Sarah cope with his coma and how important it is for her to try to return the favor.

Back in New York, Johnny barges into Berk's office and as he grabs his arm, he's hit with a vision of Berk telling Roy not to throw his career away over Aubrey. Johnny confronts Berk about the cover-up and Roy's son, Darren. While holding Darren's demo tape, recorded recently in Philadelphia, Johnny realizes Roy Foldes was in the audience with them. Johnny and Sarah head to the club where Darren is scheduled to perform next, only to find that his show has been cancelled due to his drunkenness. When Johnny touches Darren's empty guitar case, a vision is triggered in which Johnny is sitting in the driver's seat of Roy's car, swigging a bottle of bourbon with Roy's old guitar next to him, as the vehicle drops over the cliff. At first, Johnny is confused by the vision, but Sarah pulls out an old keepsake box and produces several old ticket stubs from Roy's last tour. They realize that Darren is following the route of Roy's final tour before he "died" and that Johnny's vision is foretelling Darren's death, on the anniversary of his father's.

Johnny and Sarah race to get to the bluff in time to stop Darren from committing suicide. Johnny realizes they have his cell phone number from an earlier encounter and calls him as he prepares to imitate his father's death. Johnny tries to convince him not to go through with it, but Darren hangs up on him and starts to drive towards the cliff. Johnny and Sarah pull up to the bluff and see the wreckage below, but are relieved when they hear Darren behind them. As Johnny picks up a discarded letter, he has a vision of Roy writing anonymously to Darren from a diner. Johnny, Sarah and Darren head to the diner where Sarah and Johnny see Roy working. Sarah confronts Roy, who at first denies who he is. However, when Roy sees Darren, he can't hide his emotions. Meanwhile, Berk pulls up to the diner and confronts Johnny. In a vision, Johnny sees the moments before the car crash and realizes that Berk has known about Roy all along. He notices that Roy is wearing Aubrey's bracelet and asks to see it. At that moment, Doug pulls up and prepares to expose Roy on television, but Johnny holds him off a little longer.

Johnny and Sarah return to Vickings' record store where they question him about Roy and expose the truth - that Stephen killed Aubrey and covered it up to "save" their career, since Roy had actually written all of the music they supposedly wrote together and was preparing to leave his successful career behind. As the police take Vickings away, Doug agrees not to break the story so that Roy can continue to live in anonymity. Roy and Darren resolve to try to make up for lost time and Johnny and Sarah share a tender moment before walking away.
