In a bizarre turn of events, Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery) begs Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall) to help him investigate the disappearance of his girlfriend, Miranda (Laura Harris).

SYNOPSIS:
Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall) and Bruce (John L. Adams) are stuck in traffic on their way to a five-star beach resort to attend a Faith Heritage fundraiser. When they arrive, they push through the revolving door of the hotel, and Johnny is hit with a vision of Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery), pleading with him for help. Meanwhile, Stillson is romancing Miranda Ellis (Laura Harris) on her family's sailboat. He's clearly in love with her, but the look on her face when he's not around suggests she may not feel the same way about him. Back at the hotel, as Johnny is checking in, he flashes on Stillson and Miranda arriving at the hotel earlier. Purdy's (David Ogden Stiers) voice brings him back to reality and he and Bruce join the Reverend for lunch at the hotel restaurant. Purdy becomes nervous, however, when he spots Malcolm Janus (Martin Donovan) in the distance, and he leaves abruptly. When Johnny receives the check, he's hit with a vision of Stillson and Miranda having a romantic dinner at the same restaurant. Back in the present, Johnny comments to Bruce that he believes Stillson really is in love. The two go to the marina in search of the Ellis' boat, Seamore 9, and clues to why Stillson would ask Johnny for help. When they find the correct slip, the boat is gone, but as Johnny touches the piling, he's thrown into a vision of Stillson on the boat out in the open ocean, frantically calling for Miranda. Snapping back to reality, he tells Bruce to alert Walt (Chris Bruno) and the Coast Guard. Meanwhile, on the boat, Stillson starts to feel seasick and goes below deck to lie down. Immediately, Miranda's demeanor changes.

A while later, Johnny, Bruce and Walt are searching for the Seamore 9 with the help of the Coast Guard. A radio report indicates that the boat has been found with only Stillson onboard. At the hotel later that day, Senator Harlan Ellis (Don S. Davis) holds an impromptu press conference to alert the media. Away from the cameras, Johnny and Bruce are joined by Purdy, who tells them he's cancelled the fundraiser. Johnny goes upstairs to change his clothes for dinner and is disturbed by an urgent knock at the door. He is surprised to find Stillson there, pleading with him, exactly like in his earlier vision. Stillson pulls out one of Miranda's sweaters and asks Johnny to touch it to find out if she's alive. Johnny refuses, and demands to know why he should help the congressman after all the pain he's caused others. Stillson begs him to think of Miranda and Johnny finally relents. He touches the sweater and has a quick flash of Miranda underwater. With that, he agrees to help Stillson investigate what happened to his beloved. Stillson extends his hand to Johnny and as he shakes it, nothing happens. Johnny is visibly thrown that their contact did not trigger his Armageddon vision, and later relates this bizarre change to Bruce. The two consider the implications of Johnny helping the congressman and its effect on the future. Later that night, Stillson and Johnny head to the marina to check out the boat. As Johnny climbs aboard, it triggers a vision of Miranda and Stillson boarding the boat a day earlier and her teasing him about his fear of water. Through a series of visions, Johnny sees that Stillson was drinking while on the boat and arguing with Miranda. Back in the present, Johnny confronts Stillson, who continues to swear he had nothing to do with her disappearance. Later, at Miranda's apartment, the two search for some useful information and Johnny learns that she was a champion swimmer. As he touches her computer keyboard, he flashes to Miranda checking weather charts and forecasts on her computer. Back in reality, he covers and tells Stillson that he didn't see anything. Likewise, when Johnny touches the telephone, it triggers a vision of Miranda making a bus reservation for the following day. Again, Johnny lies to Stillson and tells him he'll try again in the morning. The next day, as the two leave the hotel to visit the Ellis mansion, they are under the watchful eye of a large man in a dark suit. At the mansion, they are greeted by the Senator, who shows them around. At one point, Johnny touches a banister and sees a vision of Ellis arguing with one of his household staff, who is complaining about not being paid. A short while later, a touch on Johnny's shoulder by the Senator triggers a vision of Miranda pleading with her father for his blessing to break up with Stillson. It's clear she's afraid of him, but her father only sees what Stillson can do for them financially and politically. Snapping back to the present, Johnny denies seeing anything to the Senator, but when Stillson confronts him outside, he tells him that Miranda is dead. Back inside the house, it is revealed that Janus has witnessed the entire visit.

Later that day, Johnny goes to the bus station to find Miranda. As he touches a bus schedule, he sees a vision of her being taken by two men in dark suits. In the present, he realizes he has only seconds to save her. Spotting her in the bus depot, he grabs her and the two narrowly escape the thugs in Johnny's car. When they're finally out of danger, a mystified Miranda asks who Johnny is. As she expresses her gratitude for his help, she touches his hand and he's thrust into a vision of her and Stillson at her apartment. Stillson has obviously been drinking and is talking irrationally. As Miranda tries to comfort him, he confesses that he killed his father, which comes as a total shock to her. In real time, Johnny is shaken by this new information and realizes that Miranda is in grave danger. That night, Johnny watches over her as she sleeps in a motel room, and panics when he wakes the next morning to find her gone. He barges into the bathroom and finds her just out of the shower in a towel. Later, the two talk about Stillson and have a moment of shared pain and regret. Johnny knows he needs proof to back up Miranda's statement about the nature of James Stillson's death, so the two drive to the hotel in Washington where James was killed. When they arrive, they discover that the room has recently been remodeled after a fire destroyed it. Meanwhile, Janus finds a miserable Stillson drinking in his office in Maine and reveals that Miranda is still alive and hiding out with Johnny. Stillson is enraged, but Janus calms him down, knowing there's another plan in place. Back at the hotel, Johnny touches the walls of the room, but gets nothing. He notices, however, that there's no Bible in the nightstand. Outside, as the two walk to Johnny's car, two men jump out. One attacks Johnny with a taser gun, while the other grabs Miranda and takes her away in a car.

Hours later, Bruce and Johnny return to the resort where they find Stillson holding a press conference. At first, it looks as though the congressman will be announcing Miranda's death, but instead, Miranda appears with her father. She steps up to the podium, somewhat disoriented, and makes a rehearsed statement about how happy she is to be back. Johnny watches in disbelief as Stillson proposes marriage to her in front of the crowd of reporters and she accepts. Stillson is prompted by a reporter to thank Johnny for his help in the "rescue" and as Johnny shakes the congressman's hand, the familiar vision of Armageddon comes blasting back. As Johnny tries to approach Miranda, the man who tasered him earlier blocks his way. The man's touch triggers a vision of Janus threatening Miranda. He hands her a stack of photos and indicates that "he" won't be harmed if she goes back to Stillson. She agrees, and as she leaves the room, Johnny sees that the photos are shots of him with Miranda. Johnny is overwhelmed by the realization that Miranda is willing to sacrifice her happiness to save his life. Back in the present, he catches up to her as she is being led away and whispers to her that he will come for her.

Later, Johnny stands in front of the Armageddon wall at home. He rips a photo of Stillson and Miranda at the press conference in two and puts each half on the wall separately. When he goes up to his room, he notices something in the mirror behind him on the bed. It's the missing Bible from the hotel in Washington and as he opens it, he's thrust into a strange vision in which Janus is speaking directly to him. He recites a passage of scripture from the Book of Daniel with a message intended to tempt Johnny.
