FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 11, 2007

Angela S.

My name is Angela, and I'm from New Jersey. I have been watching the Dead Zone since the first season finale marathon. Until then I had managed to avoid the show, as I couldn't imaging it doing justice to the original film. But as it turned out, the vision Michael Pillar and the others had for their characters did it one better. I was immediately taken by the show's way of jolting you with one of Johnny's flash-photo visions and then drawing you methodically into his alternate universe…not to mention the handsome but tortured young man who's quirky, familiar smile I couldn't quiet place at first.  If I had known Mr. Hall was going to turn out like that I would have kept up with The Breakfast Club fan mail, but I digress.

The Dead Zone series revived a more romantic notion of the supernatural while recreating the original film's off-center sense of being trapped in a dream...maybe Johnny still is. However far-out the plot, it is always conveyed through some very real human emotions, most often ending tastefully bittersweet

I'm a writer, by nature if not profession, and it wasn't long before I began to dabble in some fan fiction, lamenting "if only there were some way that those connected with the show could see my terrific work for themselves" ;) And as if by some miracle, the Dead Zone creators posted on the USA site an open invitation to all inspired fans to submit spec-scripts.  An act of generosity and good faith on part of a production company I had not heard of before or since.  In the next two years I worked on and submitted two such scripts, "All the King's Men" and "The Quest".

Unfortunately the response to the offer was so great that many of the submissions were eventually set aside… perhaps in my case because both scripts were 100 pages long. Still, writing for this amazing show, gaining the skills and confidence I long needed, living through those dark and tragic, yet comic and deeply heartfelt characters, and exploring and finding something of myself in the process was an experience I will be indebted to the Dead Zone creators, producers, and actors for the rest of my life. That is the greatest compliment or flattery I could ever pay   to anyone.

I admit to missing few episodes these last couple of seasons, but it only means I'll have to buy the DVDs to catch up. I have always remained a loyal fan.…and lately I’m feeling a renewed inspiration to write some more…starting with this I guess. Again, The Dead Zone has given its fans a way to really reach out to the show they enjoy so much and be heard. Kudos to the cast and makers of the show for their loyalty to its fans.

I'm not sure what my single favorite episode is, but one of them would have to be QUALITY OF LIFE from the first season. Johnny was just coming to terms with his powers; he still had that 'a stranger in a strange land' look about him, which Mr. Hall did a wonderful job of sharing with us and putting us in his place. It is one of the more benign yet painfully sentimental stories and sticks vividly in my mind.

I still feel my scripts were too good not to share with anyone, so I plan to post them for whom ever wishes to read on my web site, as soon as I get it running.  ;)
