MR. MONK TAKES A PUNCH (#704)
EPISODE PREMIERE: August 8, 2007
Later, Monk finds Regis at a television post-production facility. Regis is working hard to complete a television commercial that must be finished by the end of the month. Monk sees some footage from the commercial shoot that shows an angry homeowner yelling at the film crew. Apparently, the homeowner was surprised to learn that a television commercial was being filmed in his home. Monk gets a moment alone with Regis and confronts him with evidence that Regis took a dive in his last fight. No longer able to maintain the lie, Regis breaks down in tears. A sympathetic Monk agrees not to tell the authorities.
The next morning, at the crack of dawn, there’s a knock on Monk’s door. It’s Ray Regis. As a show of gratitude for not turning him in, Regis wants to help Monk get into shape for his big physical fitness test. Soon, Regis is putting Monk through the paces of a grueling training regimen. Meanwhile, Stottlemeyer and Disher pay a visit to the head of the Marino crime family, Frankie Marino. Marino insists that he bears no grudge against Regis, but he does have some interesting information. The contract on Regis’ life called for the fighter to be killed by the end of the month, days after Regis’ big fight.
Days later, it’s the night of the big fight, with Ray Regis set to take on Carlos Hiraldo for the heavyweight title. Stottlemeyer leads a large police security detail at the arena, and Monk draws an important assignment as one of Regis’ cornermen. The fight begins, and Monk has a difficult time staying out of the way. Then, with the boxers fighting tooth and nail in the ring, Monk notices the glint of a rifle in the rafters. It’s the Iceman, and he’s got his sights set on Ray Regis. With little time, Monk makes a mad dash for the rafters. All the brutal training with Regis now pays off, as Monk is able run, jump, and climb his way to the Iceman, tackling the assassin before he can get a clean shot off. Stottlemeyer and Disher arrive, and when the Iceman turns to take a shot at them, the officers shoot him down in self defense.
