FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 18, 2008
I love Monk.
I painstakingly edited the show's theme song by Randy Newman from one of my Monk DVDs (I have all the seasons, by the way) and converted it to use as my cell phone's ring tone. I have spent hours converting all the Monk dvds I have to mp4 format so I can spend hours each day watching Monk on my iPod on the bus ride to and from work.
I often start my sentences with "Here's the thing" and "Here's what happened" - not really noticing it until my daughter, (who's 14 and also a huge fan), pointed out: "You sound like Monk!" My 3-year-old daughter knows the theme song and yells out "Monk!" each time it's on.
Monk's storylines are so well-constructed that there are no loopholes to find. The personalities that Adrian and the whole ensemble play remain consistent in every episode and this makes the characters so believable. These are just a couple of reasons why I find it so particularly intriguing.
My all-time favorite Monk episode? There's actually two: Monk Gets Jury Duty - I especially love the "No idea?" scene, which I find hilarious! - and Monk and the Kid - especially the poignant scene where Monk rolls on the grass with the boy, forgetting for one sad moment that "nature is dirty", because this was his last moments with the boy he's grown to love so much.
Adrian can make me laugh, but he can also make me feel his pain and cry - and it's not hard to imagine what fellow passengers on the bus must think each time they see me either trying to blink back tears or stifle a giggle while watching my iPod: "she must be crazy!" But then again, I really am! Crazy about the show and the person that is Mr. Monk!
I love Monk.
