FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 7, 2006
Our latest Monk Fan of the Week, Ruchi, was drawn to Monk because he reminds her of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (as played by David Suchet). She hopes to use Monk as an example to her son, showing him that even though others may treat him differently, he can still accomplish amazing things. Her favorite episode is Mr. Monk Goes Home Again. Here is her entry:
My name is Ruchi. I am a stay at home Mom with a one and a half year old with Down’s syndrome. I love Monk. Initially, I got hooked because I am a fan of Agatha Christie's character Hercule Poirot (David Suchet mostly) and Monk instantly reminded me of him.
What I like about Monk is that he is different. One of the messages of the show is that it is OK to be different. And not just OK, sometimes being different can still mean you achieve something that others can't. That is something I aspire to teach my son as he grows up and people start staring at him differently, or treating him differently because of his genetic diagnoses. As a show Monk is witty, as a character he is unique. He generates compassion and reverence all at the same time. Makes me very hopeful for my son's future acceptance by others.
I like Monk's quirks of touching the poles while walking or not step on the lines of stepping stones. I can almost imagine myself doing that. How can one not like it, especially since he can't help it.
My favourite episode (so hard to pick) is "Mr. Monk Goes Home Again". The Halloween story is interesting, but seeing a familial side of Mr. Monk other than his wife is gratifying as well. The most interesting episode for me was where Mr. Monk and Sharona pretend to be married. A very Agatha Christie like solution to the crime, won't you say.
Monk fans are here to stay, just keep the episodes coming!! I will make it a point for my son to see the show when he is a little older and appreciate Mr. Monk just like I do.
