FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 1, 2010

Thomas B.

My name is Thomas B.. I have been a loyal fan of Criminal Intent for a year and a half, mainly because I love the character Detective Robert Goren. My family has found me really, really odd. Mainly because I have Aspurger's Syndrome. Eccentric characters have somewhat made me feel good about myself because of their odd behaviors. But I value Robert Goren more because not many people realize this, but he was the very first eccentric character to be broadcast on any media. Gregory House and Jack Sparrow came in the year 2004. Tony Stark came in 2008. Sherlock Holmes has himself appeared on many media before, but often depicted as a cold or intellectual character, right before 2009 brought out Sherlock's true eccentricity. Robert Goren came in 2001.

Most importantly, Det. Goren has a unique insight into human nature and the nature of evil. He has caught them and shamed their monstrosity and gave hope and strength to children. Even defended his closest friend, Alexandra Eames, attempted to bring justice for the death of Captain Ross, and even allowed Detective Mike Logan to be part of the Major Case Squad, even if for only three years. His character plot made me empathize with him than any other character in the Law & Order franchise. He was taking care of his mother who had schizophrenia and dealt with a brother who had a gambling addiction. He also fought against his own personal arch-enemy: Nichole Wallace.

His relationship with father figures didn't turn out well either. The man whose last name he took, left him, his mom and his brother when he was a child. His biological father was a serial killer, and his mentor was psychotic that even out of good intentions for Goren, committed horrible acts and even neglected his daughter till she impressed him. But I have to admit that if it weren't for Gaga, Goren would have lost his complete sanity. Goren found his redeemable ending when he found a new family with a niece that looks up to him and makes him happy. He's my favorite character on TV, and I think he could tear House apart if he wanted to. I hope to see him in guest-starring episodes.
