"Uberlin" - Berlin, Germany

"Same evasive tactics on the way home. And don't worry about Joan. If all goes to hell, it's on me." —Arthur Campbell

With central importance to the Cold War, few cities are as associated with spies as Berlin. And when one of Arthur's former assets asks for his help, he revisits the "garrison of spies", with Annie in the unenviable position of serving as the handler of the DCS.

  • Berlin was the second destination in the European shoot for Season 2.5, following Venice and preceding Stockholm. Berlin was also the first overseas episode for Peter Gallagher (Arthur).

  • Between Berlin's significance to the Cold War and the insight it provides into Arthur's history with the CIA, Berlin was always a city the writers wanted to utilize.

  • In addition, Berlin itself is a unique mix of old and new — with remnants of the Cold War next to modern development, the city itself reflects the old world meets new world themes present in the episode.

  • Numerous locations in Berlin were chosen for their historical significance, such as Potsdamer Platz, which was bisected by the Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie, one of the few crossing points in Berlin between East and West Germany. But perhaps most striking was the abandoned NSA Listening Station, a rare (and formerly classified) facility built during the Cold War to listen to communication traffic in East Germany.
