Ted Danson


Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Ted Danson stars as Dr. John Becker, a talented, dedicated physician prone to unleash rants on life's incongruities, in the hit comedy series BECKER. Danson was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Dr. Becker.

Eleven years, Danson starred as the former pro-baseball player, ladies' man and bar proprietor Sam Malone in Paramount's classic series "Cheers." During the show's phenomenal run, he was Emmy-nominated nine times for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, winning in 1990 and 1993. He also garnered two Golden Globe Awards for the role. Additionally, he has guest-starred on such series as "Frasier," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Veronica's Closet," the season finale of "Ellen," and has lent his voice to "The Simpsons."

Danson appeared alongside wife Mary Steenburgen, as James Van Praagh in the highly-rated CBS miniseries "Living With the Dead." He also appeared as Lemuel Gulliver in the critically-acclaimed miniseries "Gulliver's Travels" and as Jim Tuite in "Thanks of a Grateful Nation." Additional telefilm credits include "The Women's Room," "When the Bough Breaks," which he also produced, and the groundbreaking "Something About Amelia," for which he won a Golden Globe Award.

In the feature film arena, Danson has had roles in such critically-acclaimed films as "Mumford," "Saving Private Ryan" and the independent film "Homegrown." His other credits include "Three Men and a Baby," "Three Men and a Little Lady," "Cousins," "Dad," "Made in America," "Pontiac Moon" and "Getting Even with Dad."

Born in San Diego and raised near Flagstaff, Arizona, Danson moved to California to attend Stanford University, where he became interested in drama during his second year. In 1972, he transferred to Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon University). After graduating, he was hired as an understudy in an Off-Broadway production of "The Real Inspector Hound," and then played Tom Conway on the daytime drama "Somerset" from 1974-76. He moved to Los Angeles in 1978, landing the role in "Cheers" in 1982.

Danson is a founding member of the American Oceans Campaign (AOC), an organization established to alert Americans to the life-threatening hazards created by oil spills, off-shore development, toxic wastes, sewage pollution and other ocean abuses. He lives with his family in Los Angeles.
