Warning: Contains spoilers for Queen of the South 205!
There was a moment in last week’s episode of Queen of the South that quite literally had hearts racing. Teresa Mendoza’s journey can only be characterized as an upward climb often filled with the most precarious circumstances, yet time and again, she manages to outdo herself. Teresa once promised Camila Vargas that she wouldn’t die for her -– she’d survive for her, yet in last week’s episode, she almost died for the cause.
1. Welcome to La Paz, Bolivia.
The increasingly complex triangle, which consists of Teresa, Guero, and James, travels to La Paz, Bolivia, in search of product for their business back home in Dallas, TX. We quickly learn that La Paz houses some of the most sinister players in the game, one of whom is El Santo, a callous and dangerous drug lord. According to Guero and James, even Epifanio is terrified of him.
2. A betrayal.
Guero insists that his contact, Leo, is the best in Bolivia, and the surest way to request an audience with El Santo. We soon learn, however, that Leo is Guero’s ex-girlfriend with a murky past. It seems the two ended on bad terms, for instead of brokering an introduction with El Santo, Leo tips off the Bolivian police and their merciless leader, La Capitana.
3. The life-threatening test.
Teresa is immediately singled out by La Capitana, and when asked if she knows the whereabouts of the infiltrators looking to traffic cocaine from La Paz, she feigns ignorance and responds by saying she is “here to party”. And party she does. La Capitana invites her to snort a small amount of cocaine, which Teresa does ever so hesitantly. “Again,” orders La Capitana, setting aside an even larger amount of cocaine for Teresa to inhale.
4. A potential overdose.
When La Capitana commands Teresa to snort cocaine for the fourth time in a row, we realize that she is spiraling towards a drug overdose. It is at this point that Guero steps in and offers to pay the police off with the one hundred thousand dollars originally intended for El Santo. As Teresa’s heart rate increases with each passing second, Guero and James desperately search for a solution. After being soaked with ice-cold water and swallowing a set of pills, she regains her composure.
Our Queen refused to snitch, demonstrating the utmost loyalty, even if that meant dying in the process. She escaped with her life this time around, but we have to wonder, will there ever come a time when her luck runs out?
