Queen of the South returned on Thursday evening with an explosive first episode that featured everything from a high-speed car chase to the gruesome death of one of its main characters. While there are many standouts from the season two premiere, there is one scene in particular that caught our special attention from a practical standpoint.
Teresa Mendoza wants to be a part of Camila’s business, but must pitch herself for the job before she is given the green-light. In doing so, she teaches us a few things about selling yourself in an interview and crafting the perfect elevator speech.
1. Be direct with your intentions.
Teresa doesn’t knock, or even ask for permission to speak. Instead, she walks into Camila’s office with an air of confidence and conviction, and proudly states, “I’d like to talk to Camila.” She subsequently states her purpose for arranging the meeting -– to be a part of the business.
2. Don’t shy away from touting your skills/area of expertise.
Camila claims she has all the muscle she needs, and thus, doesn’t require any extra protection. This, though, is not what Teresa is willing to bring to the table. Her extremely high level of intelligence has given her the gift of numbers, and she has an impressive track record as a money-changer in Sinaloa to prove it.
3. Be prepared to negotiate.
For Camila, being good with numbers simply isn’t enough, and she cites Teresa being swept off her feet by Guero as an example of how easily swayed she can be. (Sexist much?) This is when Teresa brings out her bargaining chip –- Epifanio’s notebook. Camila is in dire need of a new route to bring in product, and Teresa provides King George as a potential saving grace.
4. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
“One name -– that’s all you’re offering?” asks Camila. We know by now she is difficult to please, but our Queen in the making isn’t quite finished with her stellar pitch. She promises her loyalty, yet when asked if she would die for Camila Vargas, Teresa respectfully declines the enticing offer. “No, I’ll do better. I’ll survive for you.” And survive she does.
And, that, ladies and gentlemen, is how our Queen makes the hard sell in less than three minutes! All hail Teresa Mendoza, and tune in this Thursday night for more Queen of the South season two!
