Warning: Contains spoilers through Queen of the South episode 209
There can be only one Queen, and Camila Vargas’ reign is far from over. In the most recent installment of Queen of the South, Camila endeavors to seal the deal with her new supplier, Devon Finch, and brings Teresa Mendoza along for the ride. As Camila’s new protégé, Teresa is receiving an in-depth look into the operations of the business and exposure to high-profile individuals. Thus, she must strike a balance between being assertive, yet not too overbearing. Willing to offer her opinion, though only when asked. When Camila begins to catch on to Teresa’s brazen approach to deal-making, she demonstrates her own approach to handling disruptive colleagues.
Before you watch the full glorious clip, let's break down what you're about to see.
1. A cursory look of disbelief.
As Camila begins to formulate a response to Devon’s question, Teresa quite literally leans in with an answer of her own. It is one thing to demonstrate interest in finding a solution to a problem, but to overtly cut-off your boss mid-sentence? Well, that takes some gumption.
2. A biting of the lip.
To add insult to serious injury, Teresa persists in her efforts to close the deal. 'Who does this girl think she is?' Camila likely ponders. 'Did I not rescue her from the clutches of my nefarious husband? Did I not welcome her into my home by providing her with food, water, and a place to sleep? And this is how she repays me?'
3. A not-so-affectionate dismissal.
After being interrupted for a second time, Camila interjects with a bone-chilling dismissal: one cannot possibly equate handling chump change in Sinaloa to laundering millions of dollars in drug money. With a touch of frustration in her voice, she directs Teresa to step away while she finishes handling her business.
4. A reminder of who's the HBIC.
This is the ultimate coup de grâce. Camila gently sets down her champagne, walks over to Teresa, and looks her straight in the eye. “Who the hell do you think you are to talk to me that way?” Teresa merely stares at her boss unable to formulate words when, once again, Camila takes a hit. “I am the only reason you exist, Teresa, and you want to usurp a meeting I’m running?” And with one final blow, Camila solidifies her position of authority. “I closed this deal despite your interruptions, not because of them.”
Damn, woman! Let's watch and learn!
Is this build-up of tension just the tip of the iceberg? Can we expect more feuding between a Queen struggling to maintain her power and a Queen doing everything to establish it? Tune in this Thursday for more!
