Maggie and Emma return to their childhood vacation spot Lake Kimmewah. Jammers will remember the Kimmewah reference from Season 1’s episode “Totes Kewl” in which Maggie reveals she and Gwen vacationed there together while Emma was in China. Malibou Lake stands-in for the fictional Lake Kimmewah. It’s rustic charm and eclectic houses give it a decidedly non-California feel. Nestled in the Santa Monica mountains, this man-made lake can be seen in many movies and television shows, everything from the original Frankenstein to Parks and Recreation.

Sometimes an idea is just better in the writers’ room. When the ladies were improvising scenes for this episode, Lennon suggested Jessica be the one with the powerful calves. Cut to our first day of shooting on the lake and 90 plus degrees with little or no shade and about four hours of shooting. If Jessica didn’t have powerful calves before, she does now.

To get the closeups during the race, a floating barge was set up for the cameras, lighting, and director and looked like an aquatic version of Mad Max. Two pontoon party boats piloted by locals shuttled the crew and actors back back and forth to shore.
