Veteran CIA operative Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is in his last day on the job before retirement when he receives word that his protégé, Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt), has been captured during a covert mission in China.

Convicted of espionage, Bishop is scheduled for execution in just 24 hours, but with a Presidential trip to China for trade talks only a few days away, the CIA opts to do nothing in order to maintain positive diplomatic relations.

While reminiscing about how he recruited and trained Bishop, their turbulent times together as CIA operatives, and the woman (Catherine McCormack) who nearly destroyed their friendship, Muir embarks on a personal mission to secure Bishop’s freedom before it’s too late.
