Huntington Beach, CA
AIRED:
March 17, 2005 (aired with Blue Crush)
This week Christine and Dan hung ten in
Huntington Beach, California. While there, they came up with some great ideas for your weekend for how you can spring into spring:
SURF LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SURFED BEFORE
This weekend, go surfing - especially if you've never tried it before. As you've seen in the movie
Blue Crush, surfing can be very addictive, so here are some tips to help you get started from Amy Vlachos, the founder of the
Wahine Kai Women's Surf Club:
¿ If you're a beginner, get a long board - the longer the board, the more stable it is in the water.
¿ Get a leash for your board so when you fall off it, you don't lose your board in the water.
¿ Buy some wax for your board - this will make it easier to adhere to it so you don't slide off.
¿ Read the waves. If you're just starting out, you don't want to just
hop on the biggest wave that comes your way - make sure you start off
on the smaller waves until you get a good feel for the sport.
Whether you live on the west coast, east coast, or even on The Great
Lakes, slip into a good, thick wetsuit this weekend and head out to
give surfing a try. Check out
www.surfrider.org for surfing conditions all over the country.
CHECK OUT SOME SURF MUSEUMS
While they were in Huntington Beach, Dan and Christine enjoyed a brief stop at surf shop
HB Wahine. "Surf City USA" also is the home of the
International Surfing Museum. There are also other warm weather sport museums around. For example, you can also check out the
Skatelab Museum
in Simi Valley, CA, where you can get a more complete look at the
history of the sport as well as take some lessons to get yourself ready
to hit the asphalt for some grinding and shredding of your own. If
you're looking for something other than surfing as a way to get wet and
wild in the water, check out the
Water Skiing Hall of Fame and Museum
in Polk City, Florida. You can see everything here from the first ever
pair of water-skis to some awesome video of today's best skiers.
Finally, check out the
Baseball Hall of Fame
in Cooperstown, New York. This is the ultimate destination for baseball
fans, and the perfect way to get ready for the baseball season that
kicks off in just a couple of weeks.
BRING SOME SPRING TO YOUR GARDEN
Take advantage of the warmer temperatures and do the prep work you need
to do for your garden. Dan and Christine met up with gardening expert
Shirley Bovshow who gave them some great gardening tips even if you
have a small space to work with -

SPRING SKIING AT ITS BEST
This is a perfect weekend to enjoy the last days of winter with some late-season ski deals. Virginia's
Massanutten Resort
has already slashed weekend lift prices practically in half to finish
out the season. And while most of the big ski resorts out west won't
officially drop prices for another few weeks, if you make your
reservations this weekend, you can find some great savings on top of
the late season deals -

MAKE YOUR OWN POWER BARS THIS WEEKEND
This weekend, why not make some energy bars to have as quick snacks
while you're out getting an early start on your Spring? Energy bars are
fun to make, and once you get the hang of doing it, you can really have
fun starting to experiment with different flavors.
