THE VENTRILOQUIST

Today's character, Christine, works alongside a dummy everyday - something I can relate with. Unlike me, however, she actually controls what comes out of her partner's mouth ... because she is a ventriloquist. Christine said her interest in ventriloquism started at an early age when she starting talking to her stuffed animals ... and then talking back to herself in their voices.

But doesn't every kid do that?

I'm guessing Christine probably realized that she was really talented and went with it (whereas I, like most kids, was not.) As a ventriloquist, you have to basically be able to talk with your mouth shut - not easy to do when you have to pronounce words with B's, M's, and P's in them! Basically, you wouldn't want to name your dummy something like "Barry M. Paul" or people will think you're saying "hairy and tall."

Now, I know I could have come up with something better, but I didn't. You're welcome to email me bad dummy names of your own.

Moving along, Jaron and I actually got the opportunity to try being ventriloquists, and amazingly nothing has changed from our youth - we still stink.

However, Christine does not stink and is actually very talented. She herself is not only a character, but she breathes life into other characters. And that is very character worthy. And all characters are welcome, even character's characters.
