OVERVIEW OF SACRAMENTO, CA

SACRAMENTO, CA
The state capital of California, Sacramento is home to over 460,000 residents, and is known for its diversity, in 2002 earning the title of "America's Most Racially Integrated City" from Time Magazine. The city also boasts an array of sports teams, museums, and cultural attractions, as well as a five-time Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, The Sacramento Bee, but that doesn't mean it hasn't experienced its share of difficulties: Sacramento's residents have been hit hard by the economic downturn, with unemployment at 12%, and 13.9% of the population of the city (ages 18 to 64) living in poverty. In the spring of 2009, Sacramento's "Tent City," a large homeless community, received national attention and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Kevin Johnson stepped in to address the issue of homelessness. Now, they and many other civic leaders and residents are focusing on breathing new life into Sacramento, the oldest incorporated city in the state and the western terminus of historic Highway 50.
