OVERVIEW OF MONTROSE, CO

MONTROSE, CO
Named after a character in a novel by Sir Walter Scott, the city of Montrose, located in southwestern Colorado, was incorporated in 1882.

The town originally developed to serve nearby mining communities, with railroad expansion soon turning Montrose into a regional shipping center. In time the area's economy shifted away from mining and towards agriculture, and today many of the region's 40,000 residents continue to work in the agricultural field. The area also offers myriad possibilities for outdoor exploration and adventure; with its location at the foot of several national forests and mountain ranges, Montrose serves as the gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, several other national forests, and a number of popular ski resorts.
