Welcome to Green is Universal, NBC Universal's companywide effort to
raise environmental awareness. To help spread the word, we're forming a
new kind of "Green Party" here at USA Network. Join us for a weeklong
celebration of eco-minded characters-from A-listers to everyday
people-who are out there effecting change right now and showing us what
we can do to take care of this precious planet we all call home.
GWYNETH PALTROW
Day Job: Actor
Famous For: Though she is not actually British, "Gwynnie" could certainly be considered an A-List Anglophile: she has played Brits in two of her most memorable movie roles, is married to a Brit and resides mostly in, you guessed it, Britain-London to be exact. Playing the title role in the film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma in 1996 proved that she could talk the English talk and led to her casting in Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 1999. In late 2003, she married Coldplay front man, Chris Martin, and has since had a daughter, famously called Apple (but not "Green Apple"), and a son, Moses.
Cause Célèbre: Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz asked us to "Act Green" with their PSA campaign-a joint effort by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Environmental Media Association-which urged Americans to conserve energy and reduce our reliance on foreign oil. For this year's Academy Awards, Paltrow and other A-list celebs eschewed arriving in stretch limos in favor of one of Global Green USA's "green cars" as a way of publicly highlighting the increased choices in eco-friendly vehicles as another solution to the problem of climate change. And as part of L.E.N.Y.-Limited Edition New York-the actress designed a T-shirt to be sold in limited editions of 500 each to benefit Al Gore's Climate Project, which debuted during Fashion Week last February. Now that's giving the shirt off your back for a good cause.
