The fun-loving former model, whose performance in 1998’s There’s Something About Mary launched her into the upper echelon of A-list stars, has gone frumpy in Being John Malkovich, period in Gangs of New York, and animated in the Shrek series. In addition to beauty and brains, this girl next door’s got impressive range.

Cause Célèbre: She gave voice to a green-skinned ogress in the Shrek films, and in real life Diaz is just as green as her animated counterpart. But for Diaz, greenness isn’t a physical condition – it’s a way of life. The committed environmentalist is at the forefront of the celebrity eco-activism movement, and has teamed up with former Vice President Al Gore on several projects designed to raise awareness about climate change. She also wrote the book (well, a book) on personal greening, helping to develop The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time. Recently, she completed a 5-minute film, Cameron Diaz Saves The World!, which focuses on raising awareness about environmental issues. “The planet needs a publicist,” Diaz has said. And based on Diaz’s eco-resume, it looks like Mother Earth may have found just the woman for the job.
