SHERYL CROW

Day Job: Singer/Songwriter

Famous For: Her first album, "Tuesday Night Music Club," put her on the music map after years of being a backup singer by garnering three Grammy awards in 1995. She followed up her solo-artist success with a slew of hits-including "If It Makes You Happy," "Everyday is a Winding Road," "My Favorite Mistake," "Soak Up the Sun" and "Good is Good"-several appearances as a headliner for the Lilith Fair tour, a total of nine Grammy awards and 30 millions album sold worldwide. In 2006, days after she and former fiancˇ Lance Armstrong called off their wedding, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer, for which she underwent a lumpectomy and radiation. In May 2007, the rocker adopted a baby boy, named Wyatt.

Cause Célèbre: In April 2007, the socially-conscious singer embarked on a two-week, eleven-college bus tour with Laurie David, global-warming activist and producer of Al Gore's Academy Award-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, to raise awareness of global warming and get students to join the movement to demand solutions from our country's leaders. The pair plus their entourage lived an environmentally friendly life while on the road: the tour buses ran on eco-friendly biodiesel fuel, all paper goods were made of recycled paper, they used utensils purchased at a thrift store instead of plastic and tried to keep chargers and other electronics that drain power unplugged when not in use. She got a bit of flak for her "one square [of toilet paper] per restroom visit" and "dining sleeve" instead of paper napkins ideas that she proposed on her blog during the tour, but her heart-and thinking-was in the right place. To do her part on a personal level, the rocker turns off lights when she leaves a room, drives a hybrid car and is getting solar panels for her house.
