ORLANDO BLOOM
Day Job: Actor
Famous For: After a minor television and stage career in the U.K. that seemed to be going nowhere fast, this young actor not only managed to catch the attention of director Peter Jackson, but also get himself cast in not one but two mega-blockbuster franchises-The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean-establishing Bloom as an international superstar, action hero and heartthrob-not necessarily in that order.
Cause Célèbre: Bloom has recently become a (very handsome) poster boy for global warming, lending his celebrity status to help promote various causes and campaigns. In 2005, the budding environmentalist appeared in a star-studded campaign for Climate Star, which put forth the idea that "Global Warming isn't cool, but stopping it is." He helped make global warming even cooler when he helped launch Global Cool, with then-girlfriend, actress Kate Bosworth, at the carbon neutral Fuji Rock Festival in July 2006. The U.K.-based organization's MO is to cut carbon emissions by ten million tons in ten years. Elle magazine featured Bloom in their Green issue in May 2007 in their "Elle Man" column, in which he spoke about how he's trying to make a difference on a personal level by building an environmentally-friendly house in London and purchasing carbon credits to offset the emissions that come from having to take so many planes, trains and pirate ships all over the world for his day job.
