AL GORE

Day Job: Former Vice President, Chairman of Current TV, Bestselling author

Famous For: Gore was inaugurated as the 45th Vice President of the United States in January 1993, alongside President Bill Clinton, serving in that position for two terms. He ran for President in 2000 but lost to George W. Bush.

Cause Célèbre: Gore was green before green was sexy. But it was his hard work, unwavering belief and dogged determination that almost single-handedly pushed the health of our environment and planet into the international spotlight, making global warming the hot button topic, so to speak, of our time. His gave his first Congressional hearing about global warmingÑa term and an issue not many people had heard of much less thought about, beforeÑway back in 1982. In 1992, he wrote and published Earth in the Balance, his passionate treatise about how humans were contributing to global warming. Years later, Gore evolved his story (unfortunately, there was so much more research and evidence for him to incorporate) and took his showÑslideshow, that isÑon the road. In 2006, with the help of environmental activist, film producer and wife of Larry David, Laurie David, the slideshow was turned into a feature documentary called An Inconvenient Truth. The film made a big splash at Sundance and went on to win two Oscars. A paperback version of the movie went on to become a New York Times bestseller. Oh, and he also just won this other little award called the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, along with the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for his work in this area.
