The Colony season finale was totally mind-blowing, but one thing we can’t stop thinking about is finally getting to see a Rap up close and personal.
To make the Rap suit, Colony turned to Legacy Effects, a company that has created countless memorable suits and robots in television and film. Legacy then teamed up with the 3D printing company Makerbot to turn their vision into a reality.
3D printing allowed the designers to cut the molding and casting process, which saved a lot of time and thousands of dollars. It took less than two weeks to print out the entire suit, which artists then tested and assembled. And just like that, the Rap was finally born.
For such a modern series, it seems extra fitting that Colony used an emerging technology as cool and interesting as 3D printing to create one of the show’s iconic images. To get an inside look at how the Rap was designed and assembled, check out the video below.
