Q & A
What are small things a person can do to impact others' lives?
I think it's easy to overlook the little things, but the way we think about each other and the words we use every day make a huge difference in what happens and how we see possibility in ourselves and in each other. If we only talk about, say, a woman in sub-Saharan Africa as a potential recipient of a nonprofit organization's services, we may perpetually see her as a weak, needy individual, and we may never believe in her potential to do great things. But, if we can instead talk about - and even interact with - her as a hard-working, intelligent entrepreneur, we will be much more aware of her abilities to lift herself and her family out of poverty when given a chance to do so.
What's your general philosophy on being a good traveler, not just a tourist?
On almost every trip to a new place, there are moments when navigating your way can get a little overwhelming. But, what I've learned again and again is that people generally overestimate danger, and underestimate the inherent goodness of people. They may see something on the news about one
